Need assistance in finding appropriate IR diode or green module

So i recived my first green laser(module, im into DIY) from dino, it took 1 month but it came so i was mega stoked. In my excitement and rush to get it going, i conected it straight to a batt. Yes i know i shouldn't have but it worked and i was having so fun watching the beam outside reflecting of dust particles.
Anyways, the next day i went to play with it again, but after a few mins i accidently removed the wire and put it on again, and poof no more laser :yabbem:....silly boy

i belive its a flat diode but im not sure. so what im looking for is correct IR diode, or green module to fit into heat sink housing (housing is 1.8cm dia)

[EDIT] nothing yet then ehhh? i'll just wait it out im sure someone on this forum has some knowledge on this....... well this is the green module im looking at anyways but it's from dealextrem and i really dont want to wait 3 weeks to 2 months for another laser (need to test some of the DIY laser projectors im making) any ideas?

Connecting a battery directly to the laser, you should have known this would happen. This sounds like you blew up your ID diode. The view of the diode you posted is probably the diode inside some mount, they usually come in 5.6mm cases, 9mm cases or a C-mount. You'll need a replacement 808nm diode, but I'm not sure what power it should be, I guess around 500mW.
That white thing looks like a TEC, but it's a really blurry photo.

For the replacement diode, would it suffice if i use a normal open can diode(its really hard to find flat IR ones).The diode has to sit up really close to the Nd:YVO4 crystal can open can do that?
AHHH yes it is a TEC thanks for that too.
Sorry if it sounds like spoon feeding, i've searched the forum and google and have brought up next to no info.

That's a c-mount, they're not hard to find.

But an open can diode close enough to the crystals would work too.
 
Nope its not a c-mount, what i mean by flat is, it is open can but the lenght if the tall gold bit, is really small and accross the top of the diode is a short peice of fiber glass rod.... does this help?

Tomorrow im going to buy a magnifying glass so i can take a macro picture of the diode and heat sink, i hope this will also help.

If you dont mind me asking, do you know where I can buy a 4mm diode. I heard someone say they can be found in certain cd/dvd burners, but would they be strong enough?
 
Standard sizes for laser diodes in TO cans, are 3,6mm, 5,6mm and 9mm , and this is the diameter of the rear "flange" (the back cylindrical plate where the pins go through).

Usually the 3.6mm ones are red and blue from dvd burners for laptops, so your one is probably a 5.6mm or a 9mm, it depend from the power.

You need first to take away that diode from the brass base and measure that, for know this part.

Second, that diode don't look too much "standard" shaped, as for the chip holder, it can be difficult to find a replacement ..... anyway it's called "open can" diode type ..... and yes, they are usually choosed for keep them very close (but NOT in contact) with the crystals in the cheap modules, so there's no need to use extra astigmatic correction optics.

Third, also if you find the correct diode type, it's not just matter of swap the two ones, you also need to realign it with the crystal, both for the distance AND for the polarization, otherwise the crystal just don't lase.

white thing, dunno where it was located. If it houses one of the nonlinear optics, then it is probably a TEC. If it is located outside the cavity, it could be there for optical feedback.

Usually easier to get another module than to fiddle with the bits. If you get the diode out of the diode holder, make note of where the notches are pointing, mark it with a pen or something. This way, you have a hint at where to try to line up the diode.

okay cool all that info was a big help, yeah this will take alot of fiddling and frustration, but im sure I can fix it :yh:, now to find a replacement.

Had to google that one, ive been trying to find what that was for ages, thank you verry much. And yep its a TEC
 
FAC corrected, is related to the Fast Axis Correction lens (that resemble a small glass wire) that in your pic is, apparently, placed on the brass holder, glued with epoxy just in front of the LD chip (take care about it, it's delicate).

This can cause another problem, thinking about it ..... the fact that the FAC lens was placed on the holder, and not on the diode, means that it was aligned after the diode was fit in the holder ..... if the spare diode don't go EXACTLY (and i mean, centesim of millimeter quotes) in the same position of the original one, the FAC lens is not aligned with the new chip ..... can need to realign also this, for a different brand of diode, and it's a damn pain you-know-where, to realign a FAC without a specific optical setup (especially cause it's infrared).
 
hi, i think you can ask the seller to repair the module for you. they usually has 3 month or more waranty time. if you take the module apart, the seller(dino)may refuse to repair it for you.

haha no way thats gonna happen :p, ive already fiddled with it and taken it apart

Ohhh bugger the FAC is broken so im sure this is a lost cause, i'll save this for later when im more confident and have reserched more about dpss laser systems and different types of optical methods.
