Navy Laser sets ship on fire

Hey CC...
looks weird in the fact that they didn't put a target on the target
ship and aimed at the outboard motors instead... They could have
used another Black target...

The ignition looked like some onboard pyrotechics.... Much too
position stable.. IMO

Also...no shots of the ship that had the laser... not much proof
that a laser started the fire....:undecided:

Why not test it in a realistic scenario? ;)

This is perfectly feasible with all of the guidance technology the Navy has at its disposal. We had absurdly accurate guidance technology 10 years ago. It's only advanced since then.

Besides, my DSLR can do face tracking at the rate the boat was bobbing and it's only a $1200 device. Now apply the budget that the military was given during the Bush administration. Now when you put two and two together...

Well, there are vehicle mounted lasers to destroy IED's and shoot down ICBM's. I feel like a laser doing this is not far fetched.

But... based on your experience with 15kW CW lasers, did a laser start this fire? :p

I think the concept is feasible. Aiming at a boat a mile away is not that difficult with modern technolgy. Israel has developed laser systems to shoot down incoming projectiles travelling much faster and demonstrations of that system were successful... which is quite a feat since the projectiles they are faced with are not nicely shaped rockets but homebrew unguided ones with erratic flight paths.

Obviously such lasers have little or no role in modern warfare as you could easily make your target reflective to the wavelength of the laser, and even retroreflective if you want to shoot back free of charge :D

Gee Trevor.... with all those first hand facts you must be right and I must be wrong....:cryyy:

this laser is amazing!

Maybe it can light a boat (or not, whatever^^) but the ultimate question is:

will it pop a balloon?

(really what's up with you guys? normally this is the first thing that has to be cleared)

As long as the balloon will threaten fleet security, it surely will !

I think it will vaporize it or send it into another dimension...:D

^^^^ He!!... we can probably bring that hydrogen filled balloon down with
a 1 watt 455nm Laser....

Based on what else the Navy (and Air Force) has at their disposal, I'm just saying that the burden of proof this didn't happen is on you. Remember the words of our friend A. C. Clark: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ;)

All I was saying is the Video in the 1st post looks like... as you put it
"magic"... to me.... and question it...
I never said that the technology does not exist since I'm fully aware
that it does... It still doesn't look like a Laser set it on fire to me...

Prove to me that in that specific Video a Laser caused the fire...
I can be convinced with facts... With the facts as I see them now
I question that a Laser set the Fire... It looks more like pyrotechnics
to me....

I don't need to prove anything to you... I stated what I see in that
Video... so prove me wrong if it bothers you so much...:yh:
