I just acquired 2 HeNe's one is red the other is a yellowish color. they are only 5mW but still pretty cool here is some Pics of the red one.
Remember that the anode and cathode end will give you a ZAP if you touch them, and from what I read it is good to keep these tubes 'conditioned' by running them for a 1/2-1 hour at least per month.
"Newer" HeNe's do not have this requirement. Hard-sealed HeNe tubes do not operate at the kinds of pressures that argons or kryptons do.
IINM, HeCd's need maintenance burns because of the added metal content
Peace,
dave

That one looks like an orange HeNe. That's the rarest of all the visible HeNe colors and the only one I don't have in my collection, I've never even seen one in person. That also appears to be one of the extremely rare metal/ceramic plasma tubes. You might drop Sam Goldwasser a note, I'm sure he'd love to have some pictures of that unit to put in the online gallery.
Yeah it's pretty rare to even find a working soft seal HeNe tube anymore. Everything switched to hard seal in the 80s, so nearly all of the soft seal tubes are ancient and long dead.

Well, it depends on the camera. This is daguin's photo of my 594.1nm HeNe:
Based on how it looks in the photos and how the beam looks in the lower portion of Dave's photo, my money's on 594.1nm.

It's pretty easy to tell. Yellow HeNes are about the same color as the yellow light in a traffic signal. Orange ones are bright orange, like a neon indicator lamp.
I'd trade a working green HeNe for an orange one but have yet to find one available.
