my first argon ion laser

Enjoy they are fun. Remember to run it every month for a couple hours to keep it alive. They will get hard to start if you don’t do this. Also be careful inside the voltages are lethal. They make great space heaters in winter.

The argon ion laser tube is a bit like the aluminum capacitor. It can deteriorate during storeage without regulal powering.
I think this one doesn't power up more than one decade before I got it. I have to apply high voltage low current between
cathode and anode for about 2 hours to revive it.

Let it run for like 8 hours and that should fix

I have a single line argon that is not water cooled and these shouldn't need to be run that often. Unless they are fairly high power ones you shouldn't need to do that. Any air cooled one should work fine irrespective of the number of times you run it.

I have an ILT500mw unit that says otherwise. If I don’t run it at least twice a year it takes days to get it back.

Mixed gas would know best but I have not seen him here in a long time

Mine has gone years without running. The tube in it is fairly new though. I ran it just last year without any problems.

It’s great to see someone still getting a gas laser nowadays. It’s a space heater with a laser indicator light but you can’t beat them.
