No, I'd be very cautious about doing this. You might be better off measuring the voltage drop across the diode (careful not to short anything!) - if the diode's OK, it will measure 4.7-5.5v depending on the diode. Also, is the lens back opened? this can block quite a bit of light. The other option is how tightly it is focused - if it's done right the focused dot should be not much larger than a pin-head.
