Will the diode light up AT ALL?

I remember reading somewhere that diode's are current driven(obviously need some voltage).

AS long as there is enough, the diode will take what it needs, even if you make too much available. But if you don't make enough available, it won't work at all. As long as you supply more than the minimum, it will work. But less than the minimum will not.
