MXDL Question

okay, so I used the provided resistor to make DDL circuit, its running at 419mA according to my calculations right now, its all mounted in the MXDL and everything, and ready to go. all I need is that heatsink so the diode isnt stickinging out of the flashlight on a wire ;D

are you sure the provided resistor is 3 homs? i can faintly tell form the outside (dont feel like aking apart) that its orange black gold gold, and according to http://www.dannyg.com/examples/res2/resistor.htm thats 3 ohms +-5%. but in DDL's MXDL in his torch tutorial, his resistor is red yellow gold gold, which is 2.4ohms +-5%.
2.4 ohms would be running it at +500mA, thats over on the downslope of the curve right?

regards,

amk

Just check the current...if you are getting 419mA, then for sure it is a 3 ohm resistor...

dont have a working DMM atm, DX RMA should fix that. (lol i opened the ticket 2 months ago and theyre stll waiting for my DMM, I'm too lazy, I havent shipped it yet...)

BTW, jay on your sinks does the top half of the module go in with the bottom half or not?

Take a close look at the picture at the top of this page. Then, look at this picture:
MXDL open can pair.jpg

The widest part of the heatsink, equals the thickness of the 'removed' glass lens and reflector. So, when you screw the retaining ring on, it holds the heatsink in place.

Make sure you test your circuit current with a DMM before you connect up your LD!...

Oh....the 'module'. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the heatsink. Yes, the AixiZ module halves are threaded together. But, I cut off the bottom of the module, to shorten it, before pressing it in to the heatsink. (I may try the next size drill bit, and just put a set screw for the AixiZ modules, same as the Meredith)

Ill help you out abit amk, the resitsor in my mxdl is red yellow gold gold and when i measure it with my multi-meter it comes in at 2.6ohms, so i dont know if that would give too much current to it or not.

..lazer... ;D ;D ;D

That color code would indicate a 2.4 ohm, 5% resistor. The resistors in both my MXDLs were 3.0 ohm (orange, black, gold, gold).

A 2.4 ohm resistor in a LM317 current reg. circuit would get you about 520mA.. Dangerous territory for sure.

Jay,
I am positive from looking at the picture you posted, the resistor on the board is 2.4 ohms. Just a heads up.. :D

The resistors on the MXDL's I received are also 2.4 ohms.

Hmmm...that's strange. Because, I built two MXDL/open cans, one with an AixiZ module, and one with a Meredith. But, the dirvers are different, only in that the Meredith MXDL, has the stock MXDL resistor, and measures 421mA. While the AixiZ MXDL, uses a 3.0 ohm resistor that I bought from Digikey. It measures 422mA. So, I don't understand?? I mean, I don't know how to read the colored lines, but the current measurements should prove true. Maybe they had a change in the resistors for the MXDL's? What do you think?
Jay

Or that one resitor in there could be way out of the tolerance range so it might actualy be closer to 3ohm.

Also are you measuring the current by using a 1ohm resitor in series?

..lazer... ;D ;D ;D

This picture from Jay's post on the previous page? It looks like a 3.0 ohm resistor to me (Orange - Black - Gold).

It could be my laptop, but the band looks more red to me. Anyway since his measurements are in the ~400ma range, it probably is a 3 ohm resistor. Sorry, I did jump the gun...lol. Since mine are 2.4 ohm I may have to order some 3 ohm resistors.

It may look kinda red in the pic but it's really orange.  It's identical to what was in my MXDLs.

It's definitely not a 2.4 ohm which would be Red - Yellow - Gold.
