id like to build something in the 5 watt range

i hit 2 watt with a C6 host id like a new challenge ( turned out violet that annoyed me a little .. but it was cool i guess )

prefer blue .. theres 2 nm's .. i forget which one is better .


maybe a better host if you guys have ideas?

the c6 doesnt exactly deter heat .

and i need focusing .. whats the best for focusing .. easiest ?

my m140 diode with the Three Element Glass Lens is cool but i have trouble getting it as small as i want since the dot .. is there a better solution to getting the super small dot?

this diode is probably your best bet. I would go with the 3.5A X-Drive but the 4A SXD looks nice too. It really depends on what you want.

The host will depend on what type of batteries you plan to use. I do recommend a bigger host than a C6 since these diodes put out a LOT of heat at 5W, unless you only want very short runtimes.

I also recommend getting your self a good set of IMR cells if you plan to use smaller cells so the battery voltage doesn't dip too much. The driver needs 6-9V so you'll need two batteries in series at least.

Thats about it I think. Be sure you have a good pair of goggles as 5W is some serious power and I'm sure you're aware that 5W poses a serious fire hazard. It will instantly start burning anything you point it at in about a second.

glasses i shoudl have covered these things block out a ton of light

they make my 2 watt seem like nothing .

if so that would make this a whole lot easier

id like a better host for sure .. the c6 is nice .. but its like a 30 - 60 second runtime till i start making heat

batterys dont really matter i have 18650's and some rcr123's so im open there .. im not against spending the money to buy what i need


i dont wanna be spoon fed .. i like building .. just iso parts lists and hosts n stuff like that .. i can handle the assembly

If a host isn't an issue then I recommend asking Ehgemus if he has anything available. His prices are really great for what you get plus you can order exactly what you want. There might be a few hosts for sale in the BST section too if you take a look.


Those glasses "look" to be good but it's impossible to tell from the website. 45$ is a decent amount of money for glasses so if you say that you can't see any blue/violet light with a 2W laser then they're probably not junk and actually are OD4+.

the glasses are pretty good .. even @ 2w 445nm i have to find the dot to see what im doing .. i cant see the beam at all .. so i think im good there .

190-540 & 800-2000nm OD4+

i pm'd styro and Ehgemus to get some knowledge and see exactly what i need and how i wanna go about this

You can simply order Gyazo - 8b609070fbc19927c278b2f25b9a3138.png and then all you'll need is a host. Grab one from Ehgemus and you're set. All you'll have to do is stick your module in, glue down the driver and solder the input leads of the driver to the output to the host. Since Ehgemus's hosts already have these leads attached, you just solder red-red and black-black and you're done. Simple :)

I guess I forgot to mention that if you're going to get a 3.5A+ driver then you really need heatsink it. There's many methods to doing so, the easiest would be to get some non-conductive thermal paste and glue it directly to the host.
 
Going for 5 watts, dang.
I have several around 2.7 t o 2.9 and I think I am calling it good.
Can I ask if you have a certain project like adapting it to a 3D printer to cut or etch?
Or is it for the novelty of having a 5 watt laser?

With the increase of power needed to supply these new diodes. People needed to make bigger drivers. So that shelf is for driver heatsinking.
