Multi-Element GB (feeler)

Is liquid gallium "sticky"? Does it wet things like water does or does it roll off of surfaces like liquid lead?

Also, I found a cheaper source of indium for $0.76 a gram shipped in 62.5g quantities: http://cgi.ebay.com/JMC-JM-Indium-I...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

Because that auction sells in 12.5g ingots it might be easier for you and cheaper as a whole to sell by the 12.5g ingot instead of by the gram.

Not to mention, he takes best offers. I'd offer low first, maybe $30, and then see his counter offer. Maybe you'll end up getting it for $30, and it'll b a steal

@styropyro: Thanks for the source! Indium will now be $1.00 per gram, with no minimum order quantity. (Remember, any indium that is not bought up is now mine, and I have to account for that in the prices. Sorry.) Also, gallium does happen to be quite "sticky"...I wish it were more like mercury when it is liquid, actually, but I guess stickiness can make for some cool stuff too.

@thejunkmonger: As soon as I start up the official GB, I will put you on there.

When will you be taking orders (assuming everybody has their gallium)? I'd love to get this stuff ASAP. Right now I'm planning on getting a 12.5g ingot of indium, ~10g of gallium, a pound or so of bismuth, and some tin depending on prices. Something about soft metals with low melting points intrigues me.

Sounds great styropyro! I'm waiting on three packages to arrive: Day's, ohada's, and spyrorocks's. Once those three are confirmed for arrival, I will start the official GB, as I have just found a set supplier.

Hey,

I apologize for not confirming, I thought I did (probably got confused by all the packages I received lately)
I picked up my Gallium last Friday from the post office.

I'll post some nice pictures of it soon, this stuff is very cool to have and show people,

Thanks a lot Mark!

I just found this alloy:
66.5Ga/20.5In/13.0Sn
melts at 10.7C!! If you can get some tin I'll be in for som quantities of tin, indium, and gallium to try and make this alloy.

I'm glad to hear it! I hope that you enjoy your gallium very much. This means that the new GB will start fairly soon, as I only need two more confirmations before I can start.

Yeah, this stuff is cool! I've got a vial of liquid metal alloy on my desk- now I'm out of gallium though, haha! I need some more for myself, too.

Seeing as a lot of you guys want to make galinstan alloy, tin will definitely be included. Have you ever seen/made tin "crying" sticks? They're a lot of fun.

Hi Mark,

Did you make the alloy yourself?
I mean if I get some Indium and some Tin- do I just measure the right amount and then just mix them?
Would that require melting them all? If so - how and in which vessel do you melt metals that melt at >150 degrees celsius?

This is actually quite an interesting process. Liquid gallium has a tendency to alloy with other metals by touch alone, and this is what happens. All you need to do is melt the quantity of gallium you need and simply place the solid forms of the other metals in the liquid gallium blob. Keep the gallium at about 30*C and it will take care of itself.

If you did, however, want to melt these metals, I have heard that you can do it in a normal pot on a stove-top. I have not verified this, however.

I had some blocks of pewter lying around so I made a couple of those, they're fun to play around with when bored.

Mine are broken and twisted from so much playing with them.

You can also make crying bars out of indium that bend easier, tin is way cheaper though.

I am in for some gallium and some iodine if it is available.  :)

Sounds good.  I'm not so sure about the iodine yet, but I'm looking into it.  Unfortunately, things are looking down.  Iodine can be hard to get, and you get put on a watch list for simply ordering it, as it is used in the synthesis of drugs (even though iodine itself is not illegal).  But I'm trying!

EDIT: Did some research on the laws regarding iodine. It is very closely regulated, too much so for me to feel comfortable selling it. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to take iodine off the list.

Well lucky you are, because I am selling indium as well!  Now you can buy both and compare them! (Yeah, I've been wanting indium for years, and tin was my consolation prize.  A pretty good one, at that.) But now I'm going to have indium...ohhh yes, the PRECIOUShahahahaheeeeee....erm.  Sorry.
