I just tasted straight MSG. It is now being put in a shaker, along with my Malic Acid shaker, Sucrose Shaker, and Salt&Pepper shaker.

Interesting... can I buy some on the internet? I keep citric acid around, but no other raw chemical flavor enhancers.

you can buy it at your local grocery store in the spice aisle... it is call " ACCENT" it is so yummy on avocados.

Sure, ebay has 1lb bags for $10 shipped. Also, get malic acid. It's much much more sour than citric acid. It's what sours warheads candy.

MSG has got alot of bad press. probably nothing but may be worth checking out first before you start putting it straight on food lol

i wonder if thats what they cover pringles in. i should get some, its exactly the "kick" of flavour my chillie is lacking :D

The whole controversy is just because some people may have an allergic like reaction to it or a worsening of asthmatic symptoms. But, it's not likely to happen, and likely only if you eat large amounts of it. If you're worried, you can just eat some and wait a few minutes and see if you have any reaction.

Looks like some health-crazy people say it contains carcinogenic contaminants and itself is cancer-promoting... however, these people also tend to take liberty with research findings and make far-out conclusions based on them. Not to mention, their obsessive focus on these likely insignificant effects when there are MUCH more potent causes of cancer in everyday life...

In fact, we should all just shut ourselves inside and never go out in the sun again, considering that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and sunlight is the biggest contributor ;) /rant

Agreed, rkcstr. People like to blow minimal or non-existent health hazards way out of proportion and ignore the real hazards out there. Forget heart disease, let's start a campaign to stop genetically engineered vegetables! :wtf:

Now where did I put my antibacterial, bulletproof, polarised, tinted polycarbonate human bubble? (:D) :gun:

I kid, you took the words right out of my mouth there. Plus, soy sauce is awesome, so I wouldn't stop eating MSG even if it were dangerous ;)

the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that MSG was safe for most people when "eaten at customary levels".

also a little overlooked fact.. msg is naturally occurring in mushrooms.

michae

That's correct it is found in mushrooms and MSG is primarily a flavor enhancer. It can increase the strength of many different flavors like chicken, beef and most vegetable. The controversy is a bunch of hype. I have a degree in culinary management and we used it in school occationally, learning it's proper applications. Really interesting stuff!

But does it fluoresce when hit with 405 or 445?? If so what color?
These are the pressing questions we need to know!

:crackup::crackup: I derived great lols from that. (:D) :gun: Thanks

Apparently as a child my grandmother had MSG on almost everything she ate. My great-grandfather was a chemist, so they had all kinds of flavor enhancers available LOL.
