Thought i'd post this here....someone might find it a good alternative :D

So...i ordered the wrong size copper back half from DTR's shop, needed the half backs....

https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diode-modules

.....so i thought i'd modify them :D

That's a good idea, I thought of trying something along those lines myself.

Lets see some pics when you put it into action !

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

By removing a lot of the copper from the module it might not transfer heat as well to the heat sink. This might not be a problem with lower power builds, but I wouldn't use it for a 5+ watt build. I hope you are going to use it for one of these 275 mA builds.

Hi Paul,
As you know my sinks have plenty of mass in diameter. and length , so for me with the high powered diodes it won't be an issue . But as you said if its cut down to much keep with the lower powered diodes to be safe.

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

I didn't know you were cutting down copper modules too, Rich. Yes, your copper heat sinks are very good at moving heat away from a diode. I love the thermal properties of copper. For the money, it's the best material around for this purpose.

Jnrpop, that's a nice little mod! I'm going to have to remember that one. :gj:

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

Hi Paul,
I make the heat sink a little longer then cut away a portion of the back to reveal the shelf. Its two cuts and then finishing. Or the other way i will drill out the center as normal with a 12mm drill. Then bore out the back larger to fit a copper half moon to sit the driver on. They work out quite well.

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

But, they still take a 12mm module, don't they, Rich? You don't cut down 12mm modules, do you?

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

Hi Paul ,
yes it still will take a 12mm copper module , the 12mm will side in as usual with the set screw and the shelf will be in the back portion of the sink.

That's what I thought. :thanks:

I've got to say Rich your custom host in your sig looks great!!

Re: Modified full copper back half from DTR

Hi J,
Well thank you very much for the kind words, I try my best at building hosts and sinks .
