Moderators?

Moderators aren't there just to delete spam, they are there because they are a helpful member and all of the other members respect that. In example, if a bunch of regular members complain about a users posts, the "offending" user may not do anything about his/her posts. Now if a moderator says something, most likely the "offending" user will change what they are doing. Moderators help keep order in a forum, not just with their moderator powers, but with what they say. This is why choosing the right moderators is very crucial in a forum, a "bad" moderator could really turn things around.
 





I've been a moderator on professional (not just casual hobby forums like this, but large serious company forums) for years (though it doesn't show with my casual, non-moderator attitude). Moderators really do help.

These forums are pretty good, so I don't think you'd need them for the purpose of stopping spam or flaming. But what they can be useful is for moving threads and doing similar utility type stuff.

Also, being a moderator shows you are trusted, so if you put trusted people to be moderators, then newer users can be sure they get the right help when a moderator comes and helps them out.

I agree with you 100% about how moderators are trusted and they are needed for utility jobs. I run a small "community" forum and I am an admin at a hunting forum, and if anything, a user listens to moderators/admins above anybody else. This all comes back to why I think we need mods, to clean up the place a little bit.
 
Voted yes - Mods are needed.  :P

If Avery decides to go ahead and "promote" some, then I figure I'll volunteer. I've got the time, I've been a mod several times before, and I've got no qualms about a contract. And as far as I know, I meet his criteria. :)

I would be glad to volunteer as well (I've been a mod I think 3 times now on different forums running vBulletin and invisionfree if I recall correctly) but I doubt this forum needs very many mods to keep it in check, and I don't think I've been around long enough for people to really trust me... but I promise I won't flip out like a certain ex-mod did. I don't see the harm in having mods as long as c0ld is always the emperor of LPF :)
 
I guess I'll volunteer as well, since I've had many years of experience. Though I wouldn't of been around here for long enough :)

The forums I've modded on though are proper ones. Not run by hobbyists, not run by friends, but run professionally. These are 0 tolerance forums which are run and managed very strictly, because this is the companies reputation and peoples jobs on the line, so mods are chosen VERY carefully. If at any one point, a mod screws up even a little bit, they get messaged and told off. If they keep doing it, they are removed.

Actually, come to think of it I'm enjoying not having to deal with the pressures of a mod. This is actually one of the first forums I've been on where I'm not a moderator, administrator or some form of higher power. I take back my request, I don't want to be a mod :)

Though, I will offer my experience into training people in professional mod etiquette :) I've trained many mods in the past.
 
I'd be more than happy to be a mod, and i've been on this forum long enough to know how we roll! I have been mod on quite a few forums now, aswell as a IRCop on irc.ecnet.org.
 
I volunteer too, I don't think I meet up with all the requirements but I do check up on the forum a lot and I might as well be of some use. :P
 
I volunteer to be a mod, I have experiance Moderating a load of forums. And I have to be level headed to do my job in the United Kingdom Youth Parliment. I can also program and know a fair bit about electronics/lasers. I'm also (virtually) on this forum in all my spare time, and I am prepared to sign legally binding contracts.


My opinion: The mod's can't be as heavily handed as Timelord was, he was a bit of a tyrant/bully to be
honest.
 
I would gladly mod too.

I can tell all of you right now that there are going to be a lot of volunteers, there are going to be a lot more volunteers than people that will actually become mods. C0ld probably isn't going to pick someone with a lower post to mod, nothing against any of you, but two scammers have come in to mod power on this forum so he has to be as careful as he can.

You have a point. Although post count means very little to be honest.

It does mean something though. Death Angel and Tommygreen23 where both moderators that turned out to be scammers, their post counts weren't too high IIRC. Even though post count does not mean a lot, it can show that a member has been active for a long time, and the longer a user has been active, the lower the chance that they will turn "bad".
 
Well, on most forums, mods are chosen for impartiality.

Thus on these forums, to apply that principle, anyone with any affiliation to a business, or in any way sells products should not be a mod. Because the fact that they produce/associated with products means they are inherently biased towards those products. And thus they are not impartial, and not good to be mods.

As long as you follow rules like that, problems such as scammers can very easily be avoided.
