Max Current??

I have recently built a burning laser with a 300 mw red laser diode. I am using a 100 ohm pot. How much current can the diode handle before it burns up? It is set quite low at the moment and I don't want to raise it very much until I know the threshold.

I assume you are talking about a red LOC laser diode. If yes, the "safe" current of these diodes has been found to be 420 mA. Many have pushed them up to 500+ mA but the life of the diode is decreased. At 450 mA you will get something like 250+ mW.

I'm not sure if it's an LOC diode. This is the diode I am using.

I guess it's too late now, but I'd never buy anything with "KipKay" in the
title or advertising.
Also, that diode is Closed Can, not Open Can.

What driver are you using for what current?

The auction says Recommended current: 300-330mA I would start there and check for heat problems.

You may be able to go higher but I would start with 300 and slowly twist a pot and check for heat before twisting more.
