So i have a broken blu ray drive (motor broke) and i want to the diode to good use. When i make this into a laser i need to know what exactly i need, and how.

The best option would be to replace the motor instead of making a laser IMO. Especially if this is only a blu-ray reader as the readers only have low powered diodes.

well i got a new drive so have no use for it. its from a ps3 but im not sure exactly how powerful it really is.

If you wanna low power pointer, sure that'd be a good starter diode. But if you want a burner, I'd recommend the PHR diodes for your first attempt. If you aren't comfortable harvesting a PHR-803 diode from its heatsink, you can buy a PHR-805 for, IIRC, a dollar more and its a brand new diode with long pins.

Anyway if it's a parts list you need here you go...

You need...

... an AixiZ module to press the diode into

...a driver to power the diode. I'd recommend building a DDL driver. Here's a link to it... <here>... Anyway, these PS3 diodes run at around 30-40 mA, so to be safe use a 40 ohm resistor with the driver to get 31mA.

... and its not required, but casing it up in a host is a good idea :)

... and finally a power supply. If you use the LM317 Driver, you need something like 8-9V I think. Don't worry about the voltage being too high (the chip can handle up to 35V if I remember right) on this driver. You just need to properly heatsink the LM317 and it'll work fine!

Best of luck!

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me
