Make the veteren's section for users with 1000 posts or 1 year active?

Hi,

I was always wondering why the veteren's section was based on a post count instead of on a time active basis. I have seen some memebers on the forums will a couple months of activity and over a thousand posts and they still don't seem to know what they are talking about. I have been active for over a year, and although I still have stuff to learn, I feel I could offer more viable input than many of these so called veterens with 1000 posts. Just because I don't feel the need to make a comment on every thread in the forums doesnt mean I dont read many of them and learn from them :).

That being said, has it ever been discussed to change the requirement of the veterens section to be at least 1 year active or something like that?

We have discussed making the threshold higher ;)

People post more now than they did when the requirement was set.

Also, in the past, no posts from the 'Other" section counted toward the requirement. With the change of software, we apparently lost that control. That is one of the main reasons for inexperienced members reaching 1000 posts

Finally, there have always been "special invitations" for members that contribute significant, quality info but just not often.

I have always liked the time + post count idea for membership in the Veterans group. Maybe others have ideas as well?

I always thought the 1000 posts requirement is more of a rough guideline then anything.

Personally didn't ask for a password to vets section until I had over 2000 posts, about ~6 months.

Just pm any of the admins and they will send you the password.

Btw... it's boring there. Horribly boring.
 
It has been discussed before but usually the ideas end up getting complicated and in the end nothing happens. Ideally there would be some balance between post count and time here, otherwise there will be the problems of people getting in too quickly by post spamming if it solely on posts, and people with one post who never contribute getting in after a year if it's only on time.

My suggestion would be something like: 1000 post and a least a year OR 500 if you have been here 2 years or more. Also, I agree that posts in the Welcome and Off Topic areas should not count.

I think the veterans system is just fine as it is....
If a person that has been here for quite some time and
feels he should be let into the Vets section...all he needs
to do is ask the Admin if he thinks you should get in... I'm
sure he will ask the Mods for advice...
It has happened before....

Take Frothy Chimp for example... he's been here since
Sept 22 2007... and only has 950 posts. If he asked to get
into the Vets section he would surely be invited but not
brcause of the time he's been here but the contributions
he has made to the knowledge base on LPF.

BTW...It is also difficult for you to help the member that may
need it if you don't post...;)

You shouldn't really put all the veterans (1000 posts) in
the same pot... some of us may take offense....:whistle::eg:

2000/19.18 = ~105 days that's only ~3.5 months....:san:

I would expect you to realize that clearly I didn't mean folks like you who have clearly helped members new and old (me included) through posts and i am sure a couple thousand PMs :).

This was more directed at those who have a thousand posts after a couple of months where most (not all) do not even post anything constructive to the thread.

I am just trying to make myself quite clear to all (especially the true veterens of the forum) that I didn't mean everyone with 1000 posts. The fact that you brought that point up (even though done in a joking way) means that others could take it personally.

I was not taking offense to what you said :)

And since smilies seem to be the way to make a post seem nicer...

As someone who is close to the 1000 post mark, I have to say I actually agree that there should be more then a post count considered. Although I don't think that getting access to a special section is really any indicator of "veteran" status.

I still feel like a newb and imagine I will for years to come. I learn more here everyday and I hope I do occasionally help folks out, but there are still a lot of things I am nearly clueless on. I just like to talk a bunch. :)

Yep Grass is always greener.
What I would like to see is Seller Rep & Buyer Rep in addition to the regular rep that people can use for any whim.
Any post spammer that also posts some neat pictures or jokes can get Rep & 2000 posts. Perhaps they are also a halfway decent Seller but as a Buyer they are an impatient moron who can't comprehend the mail isn't a teleporter & *gasp* might be delayed once in awhile.

I get as much Rep for amusing posts or comments other just happen to agree with as I do for actually helping people. I would have tons more if I had a decent camera & posted build pictures. But how can one judge if I would be a reliable Seller?
