So, i salvaged 7 LM340 regulators out of some junk audio equipment at work today. Are they any use for making laser drivers? I am not extremely well-versed in the details of electronic components, so comparing datasheets with the 317 tells me nothing useful. can the 340 be used in the same applications?

You sure they are LM340's or are they LM350's?

Ok then thats too bad the LM340's can be used as a current source, but it's not practical in Our interests to try an use one based on Voltage and Load requirements. LM350's on the other hand would be just fine for a high current draw laser diode.
