Greetings from New Hampshire!
It's interesting how I got here. I sell tons of electronics on eBay and I usually look at customers feedback. One of my customers also bought a $189 flashlight. It was a SureFire E2D LED Defender and it had 200 lumens. I thought I may like one of those, but I didn't want to pay that much so I found some 1000 lumens tactical LED lights from Hong Kong. When it came, I loved it. It's not really 1000 lumens (I don't have a meter) but it's bright. I was looking online to order more for all my friends for Christmas when I came across some portable lasers the same size as the tactical flashlight.
Ok, I'm not buying lasers for all my friends, but I am a USAF war veteran from Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I worked on laser guided weapons in the military and need a new hobby. I also have degrees in Avionics Technology and Electrical Engineering and never use them any more.
Lasers sound like it for me. So the first thing I do is order the proper eye protection and I ordered a bunch of lasers to start. It took me two days to find good sources (and a lot of chatting with Hong Kong) before I found this forum. I bought a bunch of small lasers 5mw to take apart. I also bought a 200mw Red, 500mw Green (although I doubt it's guaranteed) and a 1.2W Blue.
My next purchase is a good LPM. I'm thinking of ordering one from Jerry at LaserBee. He seems like a nice guy and the LaserBee IX Deluxe looks good for starters.
I hope I don't seem too noobish buying lasers to take apart before building my own, but it's been a while since the war and I'm rusty.
What do you think?
