Liquid Cooled/Immersed diode module

You'd be better off sorta custom building the container with a metal bottom, then just attaching it to the plastic sides so you can see into it. I'm not sure there is really any clear material with good thermal conductivity.
 





^Alumina, but making it clear instead of translucent requires lots of processing - and it's not cheap.

Glass it is. Some nice thin, strong glass. I'm not really looking at sinking a lot of money into the project, although a transparent Alumina would be very Startrekie.

Good essay, to be the first and with little material :beer:

Without changing much your design, I would suggest one possible change in the main oil container.

Separated vertically into 2 the main oil container and the 2 pipes (with an acrylic plate for example),
but leaving a gap at the bottom, so we force all the oil move throughout the tube and to pass near the TEC.

The main reservoir does need a lot of re-design. After building/epoxying everything I noticed that I should have put the feed point at the lower end near the TEC.

I'm looking/thinking of a few different design changes. I think I see what your talking about as far as getting the flow nearer to the TEC cooling unit.

This project isn't overly practical in open uses like projectors or even a lab unit, when a fan and TEC does the job, but I think it's fun to see what happens. In the full and complete build I would like to use a 445nm with driver maxed out producing as much heat as it can. I would also like to immerse a Flexmod if I can. I'v found that you have to protect the diode itself, sealing it into the module with some Arctic silver or such so that the liquid doesn't pass through the rectangular notch or around the side of the diode.(I.E. seal the diode when pressing into an Aixiz module).

This has been a fun experiment so far. I'm looking forward to scrounging the parts for the next build.

Have you thought of trying poly glycol?
When I worked with packaging equipment we used it for coolant, it was food grade and we never had a problem with anything shorting out.
 
I'm not really sure that Poly Glycol is. From a bit of quick reading it looks to be in powder form quite often. Not a lot of sellers either, most is information that i'v found.

I wish I could find the link to the non-conductive liquid i found a while back. It wasn't cheap but also wasn't way over the top price wise.
 
I think the stuff you want is called Fluorinert. It's a 3M product, and pretty pricey. Best deal I could find on it was $180 for 32oz on ebay. I'm not sure if the guy will ship international, though. Maybe you could find someone to split it with you.

Fun trivia - If you've ever seen The Abyss, you surely remember the scene with the rat breathing the pink fluid. Well, that actually happened, no special effects BS. The fluid in question was in fact highly oxygenated Fluorinert. Lab rats have survived for extended periods fully submerged in the fluid, but it seems they die of lung trauma after removal :(

I'll take a look and see if I can find some of the Fluorinert. That may be what I was thinking of.

I also do remember the scene from The Abyss. Too bad it kills the host after removal. If there was some way to keep the subject alive after being in the oxygenated Fluoriner it would work great in a stasis tube of some sort for space ships of the future. Something that would allow people to survive a fast acceleration with high G's.
