Recently i have been getting back into lasers and with all these new laser wavelengths coming out i kept my eye out for them. This past Saturday i stumbled across this awesome 495nm laser build by Lifetime17. I payed on Saturday, it shipped Monday and i received it today. Crazy fast.

I think its safe to say the machining work from Lifetime17 is beyond top notch. Not a single flaw. The threads are super smooth, the 14500 battery fits perfectly and the momentary button feel is very premium. The host is absolutely perfect.

Beamshots(WARNING PIC HEAVY) After playing with some camera settings i managed to get the color on the photos to match what i see with my eyes. At least as close as i could.

Divergence
So when it came down to measure the divergence it was not really possible. I only have 10 meters to work with inside my apartment. The beam diameter coming out of the aperture was 4mm and the beam diameter at 10 meters was 3mm so it was getting smaller which means i am not far enough away to properly focus this laser to infinity. Also i am trying to abide by the duty cycle as much as i can and if i really want to measure the divergence properly ill need a about 30 meters and another person. Just goes to show how insanely awesome the divergence is. id say its the lowest divergence laser iv ever seen. even better then the BDR-209DBK 405nm diode.

I try to keep the duty cycle around 30 seconds as instructed by Lifetime17 but my lpm has a longer response time so i put the laser near a cool window and lit it get fairly cold. maybe 60 degrees F. After the minute test it was still cool. No problem at all. I think my meter reads low as there are a few burn marks on the sensor and Lifetime17s much higher quality lpm reads a bit higher.

Conclusion
This laser is my dream laser. This wavelength is want i dreamed about back when the first 445nm where coming out and now its a dream come true !!! The color is stunning. The beam is so brilliant especially with fog and what i like is its only 100mw so its fun to use and i dont have to worry about burning holes in things. I would like to give a huge thanks to Lifetime17 for this laser. It truly is a masterpiece.
10 meters is likely enough distance to measure beam divergence. I doubt the Rayleigh Range is greater than 10 meters. Use a mirror to double the distance. Since the beam is 4mm at the aperture and 3mm at 10 meters the beam as you know is being focused. Make the spot size match the beam diameter at the aperture.
That spot looks like there's dirt on the lens.

A few questions. Why that size battery? Do you happen to know the focal length of the lens?

The FL of that lens is approximately 2.3mm. I believe the battery was chosen to fit the small size of the host.

Its not dirty. Its a g2 lens I think so you dont get the cleanest beam. Also its a crapy photo.

Yes the photo doesn't do it justice and the back ground looks like it has a granular surface. here is a pic of the WL i took please it's for color ..

I've searched here and the web but have not found information on this diodes fast and slow axis divergence. Do you know?

I take it the figures of 8.5 and 23 are the divergences.

Yeah the 8.5 and 23.5 are for the divergence (degrees). Fairly normal looking for single mode diodes

Yes, the back focal length of the G-2 is 2.4mm. Not too bad for my memory. :crackup:

I'm not sure if I've seen this spec sheet before now. Seems like I did, but can't be sure. Thanks, Zach.

I always thought the G2 had a rear FL of 2.39mm but Paul did use the qualifier " about " so I did not nit-pick it, besides you are asking about divergence and I am curious myself as it looks to be wider than the 515-520 nm from Osram, but we don't really know how it's focused in the pic and there is an artifact associated with this diode that people have been talking about.

Don't have one yet myself as I figured I'd wait until they hit ebay as I have other irons in the fire.

----EDIT----

It's easier to see the real print when we drown out the splash in daylight or bright light, this Osram 515-520 I bought from ebay at auction for under 20 dollars has the tightest spot, but it's easier to see it in the daylight. Although at night in the far distance I can see how tight it is with the naked eye.

According to the measured values of 4mm to 3mm provided by the o p, the beam is converging to a focal point.

These Sharp diodes all have pretty good beam specs. They diverge much more slowly than other SM diodes I've worked with. Still, I rather doubt the 4mm at aperture vs 3mm at 10 meters.

Update: I swaped in a g2 lens and now I'm getting just over 150mw on my lpm. Amazing. Thats 50 mw more then the 3 elament lens. Divergence is actually measurable. Around .3 mrad but I dont think no had it at the tightest possible focus. So maybe .2 mrad with g2 lens. Yes there is a very visible box artifact but the beam and dot are noticablely brighter. I don't care about the artifact.

Some people don't care about the artifact. It does bother me, however. You will always get more power out with an aspheric lens. You will also get more power with an acrylic lens over a multi-element lens.
