How damaging to the eye can one of these illegal Power Laserpointers be after they passed through
a) A 2-glass layers window
b) A 3-glass layers window

Does it make a difference if the glass is shiny & clean or dirty? Will the dirt, while not reflecting, even absorb more laser power?

Over a distance of
(1) 10m
(2) 20m
(3) 50m
(4) 100m

And can the same psycho neighbor who threatens others use his power lasers to set apartments on fire? Or will the window glass absorb over this distance too much power?

Firstly - if a "psycho neighbour" is pointing high-powered lasers at you or your property - call the police!

If someone's shining a high-powered handheld at you, it frankly doesn't matter how many layers of glass your windows have - it can still cause eye damage. I'd try and cut the problem at it's root by getting your neighbour to stop shining lasers at you instead of trying to defend it with double glazing :)

IMHO there is more than one 'psycho' here.
DO NOT call anyone until you have witnesses and video with time stamp.
AND, of course give up totally any use of lasers to solve this.

do not be shocked if hardly any members (with tenure) will want to post in this 'conversation' ( I am asking for it to be deleted unless you want to save face and dele it yourself)

... and who can blame them.. these types of threads are 'loony'- they are bad for the forum and its members--- just like those involving an injury-- the DEA (for sure) lurks at LPF as well as some 'others' which we should fear more than the Fed Laser Police...
Your questions show that you know less than nothing about lasers (& the law)--
and THAT makes you very dangerous.

LPF is NOT the forum for you..sorry.

The OP could be a troll or the OP could be someone paranoid. If neither, still though it's someone that doesn't seem to know much about laser's and just maby asking some info to know just how much he should worry before calling the authority's.
Having bad neighbors isn't pleasant and calling the police on them will sure cause more issue's so answering a few questions on the forum if anything will make us look better I think.

Shining a laser through your window would take a big setup for a chance to light something on fire in your apartment unless maby your windows are a foot or two apart. You definitely have a chance though to get blinded.
Dirt will block some laser light but that's not the point and to smear dirt on your windows is insane.
Getting video evidence first of this person using these laser's negligently would be helpful, he can always claim he uses them proper. You mentioned this neighbor has threatened others? Then it's a no brainer to get together and catch him in the act.
I can see exactly why Hakzaw doesn't want involvement, as others were threatened but no one called the authority's which makes it look like a combined paranoia over a person that just has a laser hobby. Why would you call them "illegal" then? as it's perfectly legal to have them in your possession.
There seems to be more to the story. Is the person physically imposing which I could see being an issue?

Fair enough - I didn't see that angle and perhaps I've a different attitude to the Police as one might in the US. I should take a lesson from this not to be so hasty. It could still be a hazard though - so it's important for OP to follow up and not just ignore it (assuming OP is not a troll).

For sure call the police, i'm on your side but just a little more info makes the difference.

I jumped to incorrect conclusions.. The OP PMed me and I owe an apology. I now feel that he is the not the 'bad guy' in this..
He wanted to know if HIS house was in danger and NOT wanting to do damage to those next door. BUT I know we all wish that people would NOT make lasers look so bad..kinda like ''people kill people not guns''
I do however.. suggest that if we want to help..do that via PMs .

best wishes FG. Hope you can get some help and peace...

update edit...
hanging a temp. mirror in your window would reflect the laser back.
nothing would pass thru.. I know it would block your view.. I imagine that this 'person' would only do this stoopid and illegal stuff after dark.. get a motion security camera-- very cheap these days. and a motion sensitive night lights may help as well...

hope you can get some relief... hak

For the OP "FunGuy" to send you a PM makes me think this is a serious issue to him/her plus kudos to for this member approaching it this way via PM's(y)
Hak, hope you both come up with a suitable solution. Placing mirror's in window idea at first I thought was a bad idea as it could be looked at firing back but since when is putting backward's mirror's in your own window's illegal:)
Do they sell cheap 2 way mirror's or something in plastic foil that kinda works?

Big thanks for all the answers. :)
To make it short and don't repeat the super long message I sent to hakzaw1: There is a concrete illegal threat and defamation involved. The threat was never acted on, but there is still much bad energy involved. Over a irritating long time, and still hasn't stopped. And that makes me just feel very unsettling.

If I just install totally reflective foil behind my windows I bet then the rumors would really start and people think I ... don't know ... eat kittens alive behind that windows ... or whatever. Plus: Most (or all?) foils make either the light strange or the room half-dark, don't they? I find that really depressive in the long run. And don't they have to match the lasers wavelength anyway? And there are so many different out there.

Yup, you shouldn't have to live like a recluse or a hermit or be perceived as one. Just a spur of the moment thought as you were worried about something that has a potential to be dangerous.
Even if you were to put some type of foil, it wouldn't need to be be wavelength matched.
I also do wan't to apologize;) by maby thinking we might have been being trolled, as it happens quite frequently here.
Having neighbor issue's isn't pleasant and even if you are not maby physically intimidated, some have no morals and can do little things like flatten your car tires for example and make your life miserable.
This is a tricky situation and hopefully enough neighbors will ban together and do a watch type of thing on top of the legal steps.

This is an odd thread. I am very lucky to live in a neighborhood that is very quiet and everyone gets along well with each other. It would take a very high powered laser to cause damage to the structure you live in. That is highly unlikely to happen with a handheld laser. Much more likely with a high powered lab laser. There is always the possibility of blinding someone with even a cheap handheld laser. I hope you can resolve this issue. Sometimes it is better to back off in a tenuous relationship with an unruly neighbor. Let things settle back down and not get into a war of words that might escalate the problems.

While the responses vary .... they are all good and well meant.
We wish the best for you.. If you use a mirror just at night, you will not block any sunlight.
IF a green laser is used on your house it can be seen very well from any angle and should not be mistaken as coming from you. Shining a laser of any kind at a home is very illegal.
I feel that doing that mirror reflection , it will not be mistaken as aggression on your part.

again best wishes---hak

I'd install video surveillance cameras on the side
of the house that is in question.
You'd be surprised at how calm people get when
they are being watched/recorderd.

Thanks, that's already the advice friends gave me. But in reality it's really hard in the city to film the parts I need without breaking the strong EU data protection laws. And that with a guy who is eager to fuel some defamation stuff.

But what calmed me was the following: I googled for the mutilations he threatened me with and... People barely do that. Really rare.
A good old beating with their own fists seems what most perpetrators prefer. Sometimes stabbing, but they're more like kill, rage attacks. Not mutilation. Plus: For a long time now all I got was sometimes shouting at night in front of my window "How this guy really needs to be beaten up" or something like that. No creepy threats anymore. (But still ongoing harassment, so I got unnerved.) And some other idiot who hears the defamation part and wants to do something about this "big problem" should have a bigger barrier, even if they get really mad about this, I think?
A few bruises against life long crippling?! I can really live with that.

There seems to be a barrier in even the most distorted humans that keeps them from doing this shit. Never really thought about that. Even the worst people seem to prefer just plain old violence or directly kill, against this psycho stuff.

Nevertheless, there's still something unsettling about it, but it seems I can't do much about it, just hope for human sanity :-/

And the hope that even with the mild punishments in my country such people get jailed for live for mutilation. They have their few normal years and after that till the end of their live "Preventive detention" -- at least here.

Oh: And the arson part I can do something about and it's unlikely anyway :)

Still, I really love the strong anti-gun regulations in my country. Nevertheless I could tomorrow join a gun club and earn my right to wear a gun. It's still very easy.
But with all new technology I hope they find some regulation which makes sense. Aren't even the most hardcore gun lobbyists against weapons for psychopaths?
Sorry, don't want to start a fight here, but I don't want to arm up to "fight back", that would end bad for everyone involved.

Make a Police report about the moron threatening you with the local Police---am sure there are laws against such harassment and threats.
