LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw - Replacement DEFECTIVE!

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

Multiple longitudinal modes don't have much to do with the beam shape. The spots of most laser diodes are rectangle, simply because the emitting area is rectangle. Multimode is a different characteristic entirely. You can have perfectly round multimode beams, and single mode rectangular beams.

And you know that based on the results from which power meter? Incidentally, what is the input current?

It's been metered and I have a power chart. I bought one from a user called Agentmcbaine i think is his name on this forum, and he had 7 for sale and they metered between 3 and 5mW a piece. According to agentmcbaine, the draw current is 80mA.

BTW I assume it's a mulitmode diode because of the price. They also have a single mode pen that puts out 50mW that is 50 dollars.

edit: I just realized I said it was a multimode diode because it's cheap haha. My bad. I'm only assuming because the dot is a rectangle and i'm sure it is because their single mode pen is double the price.

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

Item has not been received. I contacted the seller Laserlands.

Your previous message

Is it normal to not have any updates to the tracking information?

It seems to be taking every bit of the full time frame. Today is the final date. It did not take this long the last time I ordered from you. This seems to be out of the ordinary.

Their answer I do not understand:
New message from: laserlands
now it was stocked in the US on Jan 30th

How are they able to tell this?
Why have I not received it?

Of course I sent another ebay message. When I click I did not receive my item I get the following message:

I didn’t receive my item: We found 2 answer(s)
Your item may still be on its way
The estimated delivery date for this item is Feb 24, 2016.
What happens if you don't receive the item soon?
If you don't receive the item by the delivery date, just request a refund or more information from the seller. We're here to help if you and the seller can't resolve the problem.
Here's the tracking information we have on the item

I don't see any option to request refund. I sent a message asking for either a refund or another unit shipped with expedited shipping at no cost. I really want the laser, but I really don't want to wait another 30 days.

That's pretty normal. Here's the explanation: the Chinese new year. They stop dispatching items and the sorting facilities are shut down for a week or so, but then they all go out at the same time (I assume), completely clogging the sort facility in New York or other places where it's going to (yours is going to New York). Basically all I can say (and this sucks) is wait it out, it's most likely not lost. If you do not recieve it by early to mid March I would request a refund or another unit shipped out. It's the Chinese new year, and it sucks. The one thing that's weird to me, is that mine had the exact same tracking as you, the processed through wuhan ems, after origin post is preparing shipment, but mine said processed on feb 2nd. That's what is weird to me. i think I got lucky. Wait another week and then request new one shipped or a refund :)

I went on the website on the picture said, besram.com, and you can buy in bulk for like 15$ a piece but in lots of 100, or 10$ a piece in lots of 1000. Just thought that would be an interesting fact :D

30 days is waiting it out. If they knew Chinese New Years was going to cause a problem they need to provide that information at checkout. I expect the expectations they set. They didn't meet their goals. This does not provide a satisfactory experience. It is now their job to make me satisfied. I have purchased from them before. I hope to purchase from them again.

Edit:
They agree that the delivery time is abnormal. They are sending another unit. Very prompt reply. I have purchased from them in the past and never had an issue with them. I am pretty happy with their response. If both end up showing up I will gladly offer to have them email me a return label.

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

I received my unit and will post pictures later. I am pleased, but I would have to say there is no way this is 5mw. I have a comparison of a 445nm -5mw I built by sending the module to someone here with an LPM. I then set my driver to that exact ma. There is a huge difference.

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

Wow... this is some crud. I was taking pictures and it just winked out on me. It is putting out a horribly ugly dim bar. It is now less bright than my 5mw custom. At least there is another already on the way. It never got hot and wasn't on more than 5-10 second bursts.

Are the batteries too low causing it to stop lasing? Try some fresh ones if you haven't already. Don't know why a 445 would die running at such a low power level.

I suppose it's possible that it could be the batteries. The same batteries have no issue powering my 532nm pen though. I'll let you know, I'll go buy 2 more at lunch today. I'm pretty upset that after waiting so damn long it's a dud. It's not the money, it's not the fact that it is broken even. It's the anticipation of waiting over a month and it first off was over 5mw (I figured as much there though) and now it's not even 2mw (guess) when it was likely over 20mw before. (I feel 20mw is conservative).

Re: Can't Recommend - LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

Just to be sure, you aren't using two Li-ion batts instead of 2xAA, right?

Re: Can't Recommend - LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

I have only put 2 AAA batteries in. They were oriented correctly. There was an included sheet.

I just bought 2 new Energizer AAA batteries and same results, dim spot. If it went LED would it still put an ugly dot on the wall at all? Cause it has a really ugly very very dim bar/splotch now. It didn't look at all that way when it was first tested. It looked like a normal rectangular dot. What does an LED'd diode output look like with a lens attached?

Re: Can't Recommend - LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

It's almost certainly LED'ed. Kinda strange, I don't think I've ever seen a pen laser LED before.

I sent a message to LaserLands to ask them if they wanted it back since they were sending me a new unit anyway due to the shipping delays. They didn't say if they did or did not want it back in the reply. They only said that due to the shipping delay they think it was in a cold and damp environment in new york and that it got moisture inside. The unit did ship from China to New York to Texas. I really doubt it was moisture... but when I get the new unit I will put it in my sock drawer for 24 hours just to be safe... I wish I had some silica gel beads, but I always throw those out immediately just to be safe in the off chance my daughter were to get a hold of them.

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order

There is a chance it could be 445nm/447nm actually going by the price, though that dosent make it a guarantee. 405nm 5mW pointers tend to be cheaper then 5mW 445nm/447nm ones, but we won't know until it gets to you indeed.

Best of luck :)
-Alex

I ordered a "5mw" "blue" pen for $4 dollars off ebay, it was 405nm, very visible in dry air, and was able to light a match with a magnifying glass, I highly doubt you can get a 445nm for the same price

Here's what I do as a cheap and effective alternative to using silica gel.

A zip-lock bag and a hand full (or two) of rice.
Put your item in the zip-lock bag with the rice (uncooked of course) overnight and it will draw out any moisture from the item.

I've used this many times with great success.
My old mobiles (cheap Nokias) have gone through the wash a few times.
I take out the battery and put the phone in the bag of rice for a day or two and the rice dries out the electronics.

Give it a try.

Excellent Idea, I have done this with Cell Phones... I don't know why I didn't think of this. Seems obvious now :banghead: :thanks:

@pika
No it wasn't $4.00 nor 405nm, it was 19.00 and 445nm. It did not burn, nor did I intend for it to do so. You are correct, I also doubt you can get a 445nm for $4.00.
