I won this off of ebay a while back

It's a HeNe pointer from Laserex, (Aussie company I think?) and I believe this was one of the few laser pointers commercially available.

I normally wouldn't do an unboxing of an used laser, but this vintage piece had original packaging w/ instructions and everything, so I decided to do one.

This laser runs off of 12~18 VDC. It has a compartment for 2x 9V batteries, but can also be powered by a DC plug with 2.5mm inner diameter. Lazes @ 632.8nm (orange-ish red) as it has a (tiny) HeNe tube inside. Much brighter than 660nm mW to mW.

Has an emission indicator LED on top

Although the color is nice, divergence on this thing is horrible.

This is the dot from 1 ft

And this is the dot from 9 ft.

I calculated 3.5mRad. But then again, this thing has a 35 year old 4 inch HeNe tube inside, so I'm not complaining :p.

Beamshots in a lit room proved to be difficult w/o a fog machine. I had to crank the shutter time up to 15 seconds and use ethanol mist to bring out the beams.

Beamshot in dark room - can anyone explain why HeNe's emit that faint blue glow from the OC?

Overall, I think this is a great little piece of history to have for $25. It comes up on eBay once in a while, so keep an eye out if you want one!

Thanks for reading my first review. Criticism is welcome (whether constructive or not - I really just want to know what you guys think :))

The divergence of a HeNe laser is basically proportional to
the distance between its steering end mirrors...
The longer the tube the better the divergence..

:thanks: Jerry.. I just learned something new..

Op: nice laser, pictures are very impressive il keep an eye out on fleabay!!

One helluva steal there!

It is just cool to own a piece of history

Peace,

I have one of these lasers. I bought it on eBay a few years ago - I paid $5 plus shipping for mine. It's a nice little unit but does it eat batteries.

Jerry's spot on about why the divergence is fairly high. I expected that from this unit prior to purchase. The beam is perfectly round and Gaussian however.

Welcome to the pocket HeNe club! :)
