Back then, 16 and 20x diodes come only from DVD's. I held my breath when I turned it on the first time. --- I was more dareing then.
This is not recommended if you can't afford a replacement diode.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't WL do the same thing with the Pulsars?

I made one specially tested unit. Not all LD's are the same nor are all cells.

You can always use a low value ceramic capacitor in parallel to the button to avoid some voltage spikes.

When I get home tonight I am going to finish my LPC-815 build. It has the diode directly connected to a 3.6v CR123A battery. I did some preliminary testing and the diode appeared to have no problem taking the power directly from the battery. I just about blinded myself though as the module was pointing downward at a white piece of paper when I applied power. I saw red everywhere... lol.
