I recently read a news story on how lasers are now being used to induce lightning in thunderstorms. I realize we don't have that kind of power, but what have you guy's been able to do? I read a post on how one of you figured out that you could use a laser to turn off street lights. I also debated my friend who thought he could change traffic lights (I didn't think you could). Is there a master list somewhere of tricks that can be done? Things you did? If not, we should create one...

Also, I have the 400mw from Optotronics and I have to say, VERY impressed with not only the laser but the costumer service! Now I want to get my hands on 1w or more... I can't help myself!!!! ;D
 





There are some traffic lights that you can change with light, I think it's IR light, and I don't think at has to be a laser, but it would have to be bright (so a laser would make it easy). I've seen a system that has sensors on traffic lights that detect a signal from approaching emergency vehicles and change the signal to allow the emergency vehicle through. I think the light source on the emergency vehicles was an IR strobe of some sort. Never tried it though, and not sure that I would try it.
 
Yea to put street lights out of action you aim it at the top photosensor, it detects if its night or day.

So if its day time and you shoot a paintball gun at it, they will turn on.

If its night time and you shoot a laser into it than they will turn off only for around 30 seconds but its good for a bit of fun and your not breaking anything.


Another thing you can do is daze security cameras, you shoot it right into it and you can daze theme for a few minutes and they will be useless for that time before they go back to normal. (Warning the camera trick may blow out the camera in some rare cases and make it catch of fire)

Yes I agree we should get a thread that talks just about hack stuff you can do with lasers.
 
I'm pretty sure the traffic light gizmo is based on a coded strobe sequence. I don't think it's IR.

There's probably an associated event log.

Theoretically, a traffic computer guy could correlate the event log with video from a security camera. A few iterations would ID any vehicle regularly passing through unauthorized light-changes.

And then John Law would come arrest you. ;D

So maybe cracking the traffic light strobe code is a bad idea. ;D

However, I will confess that it would be cool to trigger lightning in thunderstorms!
 
Shooting a powerfull laser into a security camera could easily damage the CCD. There are many photos around, that have a few dead pixels in the middle from such an "accident".

My first laser was <1mW, and when i was with my friends at a bank, there was a monitor showing a camera feed, so my friend decided to point the <1mW laser at the camera. The screen went completely blank for a few seconds.


Since all of our lasers are way more powerfull now, you could easily damage property and even record yourself doing it. I don't think that's a good idea.
 
I wasn't starting this threat to get people arrested or to damage property, only to share different tricks people have been able to achieve.
 
I have no idea! It is "automatic sun blocking glasses". The 405nm wavelength is low enough to trigger them.
 
Ahhh, too bad lasers are bad for the eyes, you could draw on someones glasses! That too funny...
 
Sombody post tricks like camera down and street light down stuff you can do with lasers, illigal (the type that hurts nobody) is fine just make it so its not something like shooting an aircraft down.

I found a sticker on the rocket i have that does the exact same thing, when i shine my green laser at it i can draw on it and 2 minutes later it will be gone, its kinda cool.

Correct. Silver chloride is the most common, but could be another silver halide. Sunlight causes a transition to a more opaque state, and apparently 405nm is a low enough wavelength to cause the transition. I had never even thought of that, but it's pretty awesome!
