I have seen that video, a penny is like 1mm thick, I am sure any car part is far thicker than that and also has a lot more surface area to heat up.

Also his point was to heat up what I would assume to be a large area of the thing so he could pull it out or whatever, not melt a hole in it.

Also I have not heard of that stuff, it sounds pretty neat though.

I think a laser would be the wrong tool for the job in any case even if it could be made to work.

We aren't welding here, nor is any melting wanted. The goal is to remove a seized stud from an engine block. My guess is the guy has a seized exhaust manifold stud he's trying to deal with, and doesn't want to pull the motor or do a lot of other dismantling of things to deal with it properly.

The objective would be to heat a localized portion of the block where the stud is to make it expand, then cool the stud itself, so it will shrink.. which will hopefully increase the tolerances enough that the seized stud can be unscrewed.

Ok thanks for clarifying a bit. I have zero experience when it comes to auto mechanics so I was just spitballing ideas a bit. Now that you have clarified I honestly cant think of anything else that will work other than what has been talked about here already. Well good luck with all of this. The only thing I can say is that a laser is NOT the way to go for this.
