Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jason and I work for a company that specialises in Laser ablation in the UK. I have always loved lasers and I am in the fortunate position of working with some of the most cutting edge commercial lasers available.
I work with a Spectra Physics Spitfire Pro, which is a Ti-Sapphire femto second amplifier, seeded with a Spectra Physics Mai Tai Ti-Sapphire tunable laser from 650-1100 nm at 3W max power. The pump laser is a Spectra Physics Evolution 50 ND:YLF laser with a maxium output of 60W of 527nm :drool: Yep that is 60W of green for you green freaks. It has a a pulsed output at 5khz of 30mj!!

We use femto second pulses to ablate metals without destroying the surrounding material.

I own a wicked lasers P125 and an advanced 35 greenie, the pulsar is a good one at 149mw but the advanced is a bit weak at 32mw. I have my own Coherent fieldmax 2 laser power meter, so the figures are good.

A UK professional. That's great news! Enjoy your stay. Obviously the safety aspects you'll already know but familiarise yourself with the forum and we look forward to hearing more from you. Some technicalities on those industrial numbers will be interesting, (if over my head!).

thank you Arayan and Morgan for the nice welcome. Lasers are my passion and I understand them well, I would be happy to answer any questions about them. Laser safety is also my passion, it has to be. I work with class 4 lasers every day, they are my babys, but they can sting you if you dont treat them with respect.

Really good to see another expert / professional on the forum. We can ALWAYS use more of that. And that's a pretty interesting setup -- visible green pumping *IR*. Kind of the reverse of the sort of thing we usually do. :)

I wonder if 527 is much visibly different than 532?
 
^At 60W, it's probably a lot different visibly to the 532nm I've seen, (I wouldn't care what colour green it was anyway at that power!) :crackup::crackup::crackup:

You make a good point though, a green pumping up to IR? Weird. It just doesn't feel right does it... {shudders}

If there was a 532nm laser that had an output power of 60W it would be slightly more visible not much but slightly that would be the only "noticeable" difference.
 
Not sure.. 488 and 473 are only 15nm apart, and they're definitely visible, as far as difference goes. A lot of the vets and pros swear to me that I'm seeing things when I say I can see the difference between 593.5 and 589 a the same power - but I am *positive* i can. Same goes for 635 vs 632.8.

So I do wonder if 527 would look ever so slightly more blue.
 
^I'm with you aryntha, If you tried the spectrum IQ test that Daguin posted not so long ago in the, 'General', section, I'm sure you'd be able to get a zero score, (zero being no errors!).

I can tell the difference, side by side, of close wavelengths. Good eyes, is good eyes. I have blue eyes, I've heard that is a factor in distinguishing colour gradients? Yours?

Hi guys, Yes, 527 green is very different to 532 green. It is only a 5nm difference but it is very apparant to the eye. It appears much darker, if that makes sense. The human eye is very sensitive around this frequency range and the colour shift is very noticeable. Our evolution uses the same principal as a common green pointer, however ND:YLF will lase at 1053nm and we frequency double to get the second harmonic, using an LBO crystal in a temperature controlled oven to achieve 527nm.

We do all of this to achieve sub 100 femto second pulses of 800nm light that are powerful enough to ablate the surface of the material you are working on, without damaging the surrounding areas

If anyone is interested I can post some pics of our setup, without giving away any trade secrets ))
 
I'd love to see them Evolution, just because I'm interested in wavelengths and he like. And yeah, I'd guess 527 would be 'deeper' and of course more towards blue, every time I see a new wavelength it's fascinating :)
