and the light you see is the air ionization. it's own little exposition inside the cone/disk/whatever you wanna call it

I read about the star wars lasers not long ago - I thought most were CW chemical lasers in the tens of KW like chemical oxygen iodine lasers at (COIL) at 1315nm IR and hydrogen fluoride lasers at 2700 - 2900nm.
