IR laser-powered gold nanotech light "windmills" invented ("light mills" - like regular windmills, but powered by light instead of wind).
Uses the interaction of light waves and nanoscale structures to create rotation - in either direction, depending on color of laser light.
Only 200nm in diameter, capable of doing things like unwinding a strand of DNA!
Also VERY high-powered - has enough torque to rotate an object 4,000 times its own size underwater! So also potentially useful as a propeller / propulsion for a nanoscale machine (aka nanites).
Can "replicators" be far behind? :undecided:
