Laser for hobby CNC-use?

I did a quick test yesterday using a diode from a random drive I had left over.
Ran it first at 95 mA and did not expect much of a result. To my surprise it gave me a beautiful cut in 3mm depron at focus! It was run slowly to give most chance of effecting the material (30mm/min) but it worked nicely.
Increasing mA to 105 was just to see the slope and how close to lasing I was, and the slight increase now made it affect material accross entire focal range! I had no expected this.
I found online ppl have been running some of these LD's at 175 mA so I set mine for 170 and ran it again. This time everything melted. I had to increase cutting speed to get it to not melt too much all over. In the end I was up to 1000mm/min and it almost cut clean through 3mm gray depron! This is great, and I can't wait to get more power...

Does anyone have any absorption-spectra for diff materials? I'd be interested to see how much ir (808nm and up) absorbs vs 445nm and uv ofcource.

I guess it is possible but is it practical to have a number of LD's focused on the same spot? If so, you could potentially either have a much deeper/faster cut or have an adjustable width of cut ie four cutting lines in a row or all on one spot. The CNC could use another axis to control the width of cut.
If LD cutting is similar to normal machining then you will probably want a CNC controlled Laser power for different materials and speed of cut.

I have cnc controlled power and on/off now.
As for the combining, I think a knife-edge assembly is required.

Is there any mirrors in DVD/CD drives that have the property I need ?
That is, transparrent for IR one way, and reflective the other.
