I've created an IRC chatroom for lasers, named "laser chat", if anyone's interested :)

the java page to access this is http://laserchat.org (or alternatively http://xmoogle.org/laserchat/ ) and if you have a real IRC client, the server is irc.ecnet.org and channel name is "#laserchat".

if you'd like to get an IRC program so you can use the chatroom without java, xchat for windows can be downloaded from http://www.silverex.info/download/ and is free :) instructions on how to use it are in a later post (page 2 of this thread). for mac, you want http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/ and for linux, use your normal package manager to install it.

and in the couple months this place has been open it's *really* grown! :)

I will join in as soon as I get done with work :) My work laptop is too locked down to allow it, via VPN unfortunately :(

thanks :) though we had one or two less last night? hehe...it'll grow in time :) i still have to implement a form page thingy so that you can type in your nick *before* connecting to the chatroom (actually my gf will likely do that for me, she knows how to better than me), so you don't get stuck as Guest4186 or whatever by default hehe... of course that means those of you who registered your usernames would have to be ready to give the password command as soon as you connected!

ahhh, if coffee's involved it's understandable :) something funny happened when my gf came home for lunch...she noticed another package that had arrived just a minute after the lasers, that i never really looked at, in the excitement of getting my executive 15mW and pulsar 125mW (which i did light a cig with in the end!) - turns out the package was addressed to me, and it was the 2 WL cores i ordered 4 weeks ago, one for her n one for me :) they're nice, a little brighter than my existing <5mW green, though i had to put tinfoil in the cap of mine to make it work properly - loose connection...not enough of an issue and easy enough fix that i won't complain to them though :)

yeah, unfortunately IRC and/or java is often locked out on work computers. however!!! there is a sneaky way round this: first, go to http://www.ircatwork.com/. then, for "Nickname" enter the user name you want to use on chat, for "Server" enter irc.ecnet.org and for "Channel" enter #laserchat :) this will work on the vast majority of web browsers, but it's not *quite* as good a method as java chat, or even better, real IRC software. it's perfectly normal for text you enter (using this method), and the chatroom itself, to take a few seconds to appear each time, but it's better than nothing :)

this is the error I get here at home:
First of all, the security window pops up and never finishes loading but sticks at half way.

Then I finally get the error
[13:05] Connecting...
[13:05] Unable to connect : java.security.AccessControlException : access denied (java.net.SocketPermission irc.ecnet.org resolve)

I wonder if windows firewall is blocking it?..... I have access on all my other java stuff?
