Laser + Airplane = 3 years in prison

This is getting so sad. More and more people are doing this. When will they stop!? I know, when the US bans all lasers. :-/

i think they should give harsh sentences instead of banning laser. punish the irresponsible jack-ass, not everyone else....he got EXACTLY what he deserves.

" I killed a man. What are you in for?"
"Ermmmm....I'd rather not say..."
"Come on, tell."
"Shone a laser at a plane...."
".......WTF?!"

;D

I get the feeling that more of the sentence was directed towards his drug dealing than his laser antics.

im not sure it was drug "dealing." in the article there was a link that said he just had a weed pipe on him...

The way I see it, luck only goes for so far, and stupid people unfortunately use up theirs real quick. That guy did it several times, and who knows how many times before, and he eventually got caught. He had too many chances getting away with it, but I guess nobody explained to him that the green laser makes a beam that puts a clear indication better then a flare to his exact location.

People will stop being stupid in general and stop shining lasers at various aircrafts once they stop thinking inside their own boundaries, and not be only concerned with themselves, or amusement they might find for themselves without thinking about others. Because, I’m sure if he knew that he would end up there, he would probably not have done it, of coarse his freedom and pain/suffering would be the motivation for him not to be so stupid, but if he was driven from respect and consideration that it is an impolite thing to do, then it wouldn’t be so hard to reject temptation.

Einstein said: There are two things that are infinite; the Universe, and Human stupidity. And I’m not sure about the Universe.

I don’t think we’ll see that change in our life time.

Lasers can obviously be very intervening and it’s really unfortunate that the people who really respect them and use them safely and correctly (us) will suffer once these things become banned, and I’d be willing to bet that it’s gonna happen in the US pretty quick here… A law designed to limit the freedom of stupid people who do stupid things with these, “narrowing freedoms”.

Did you check out all the comments?

That’s another thing that gives me grief, not necessarily the comments from this article, but judging from everybody’s intelligent respectful comments on you tube videos, and such, well it looks like idiarcacy is dominating.

The comments......

Maybe they should look at developing "laser seeking missiles" ::) That aught to teach them a lesson...

Update on the situation:

My company put out some info on this guy and here is what we were told:

The following was sent by the FBI in regards to the outcome of last year's laser incident in CLE. They said that our crew's statements and timely communication to ATC played an important role in capturing those responsible:

Justin R. DeWalt was sentenced today, 01/23/2009, in Court of Common Pleas, Cuyahoga County. DeWalt was sentenced to a total of three years incarceration. DeWalt previously pled guilty to one drug count and two counts of Interference with an Aircraft. The three years included a one year mandatory sentencing for the drug charge and two years for the laser strikes. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office is planning to do a press release on this, which will probably air tomorrow.

Although four individuals, including DeWalt, were arrested on 06/04/2008 by Cleveland Police Department (CPD), DeWalt was ultimately the only person charged. He was in possession of the laser at the time of his arrest. Four aircrafts, including a Metro Life Flight helicopter, a CPD helicopter, a Continental Airlines Express aircraft, and a USA 3000 aircraft were struck by the laser on 06/04/2008.

3 years! In the UK you could get that for murder! I reckon a ban is coming. The legislators just love pissing off law-abiding users. :'(

What I can't understand is that carrying a gun is legal and carryinga 10mW laser isn't.

"It's dangerous" WoW, I forgot the gun was just a toy -.-

You are not consequent with your acts, you ban lasers for being dangerous and you don't ban guns becasue you say "it's your decision to do right or not with a gun"

Dead-on.

If I were was a stupid idiot shining laser's at a plane I'd use bluray cause they can't see the freaking beam.

But I don't cause I'm stupid enough to make a plane crash and kill hundreads of people and my friend's might be on that plane or somthing.

Shining at planes = not fun or funny.

Popping ballons and burning matches = more fun and fire and loud noise's.
