Okay so I want to know if I take 5 300mW 808nm laser diodes and reflect them in such a way to unite all 5 of the laser beams into one unified beam would that beam be much hotter than the original 1 laser alone?

I feel that it would burn something much quicker, I am trying to make a way to light a bond fire without having to carry all kinds of flammable lighter fluid.

any ideas?
 





Buy a lighter. And why use flammable lighter fluid? Grab some dry grass, and tinder. Or a duralog fire starter. Atleast you wont blind yourself, and everyone around you if you use IR diodes. Not a smart, or practice idea.

You CAN combine beams to get the power summed up (somwehat), BUT, the cost of the entire project and it's usefullnes is questionable.

First, you have multiwatt C-mount an dother diodes already available, why combine multiple low power ones?

Seconds, lighting fires with laser is not practical - it's a trick just to show off the lasers' power but the fact is that you need appropriate surface, material, steadyness, focus and power to do something like that.

For the price, seriously, buying a lighter is more practical.

Not only that, the entire setup with 4 PBS cubes, or dichros, would be enormusly large, also, alligning beams, especially IR ones, is exeptionally difficult.

People around here are having trouble combining red green bluray to get white laser (somewhat again).
Imagine alligning 5 IR ones.

Now, if this IS for serious - which I hope is not - consider all alternatives. Any is better than that.
 
Yeah, you are right I guess I am just looking to build something cool... this seemed safer than a gyrocopter made from pvc...

I need better ideas... lol

I think that would be awesome. I was at a party and this guy lit a bonfire that was brush the size of 2 school buses, had 15 gallons of gas and a lighter. WOW the initial flare was hot from 150 ft away. There were about 60 people there. A laser would have been ideal for this. Maybe use flash paper to light it with a laser.
 
Flare gun, roman candle, bottle rocket...

All "cool" all safe and no one goes blind. ;)

Hell, just light a $2 road flare and throw it.
 
I take fire starting personal for some reason. I never use accelerents, only a lighter, or matches. Birch bark has so much oil that you can light it wet. That and some pine needles/twigs will always start. Sure it will take more time if wet, but in the end its a good feeling that you used your skills, and not some bottled, polluting, short cut. But that's just me.

Nothing wrong with that TJ, I feel the same, especially since one time when my son was 8 years old he saw me toss a cup of gas on the campfire to accelerate it, as soon as I turned my back the little turd tried to dump the whole gas can on the fire.
 
A PHR will burn flash paper and no one goes blind. No need for the scary IR

If you are going to use flash paper then just use a lighter. Yeah its cute to use a laser, but takes some time, and not worth the effort, but as it being practical, at least over a lighter, its not. Period.

Sometimes one just has to stand out of the crowd and light the fire in most unusual way. The lasers.

We are not talking simplicity and effort-wise here. We are talking style ;)
 
I like the idea. And will be expanding on this. Sorry but this is LPF.
And for some reason we all have burning lasers.

I'm not saying it is. I'm just saying it cool and out of ordinary - enough for one to attempt it.

Or were you talking to the other guy who posted after me?
