Largest Wattage in Handheld Portable Laser?

I was wondering what the highest possible output power could be for a portable laser. Is there a cut off? If it is limited why?

Well right now I think it is around 2W of 445

I think it's around 5 watts for a IR laser and it gets limited by current drain on batteries and diode heat sinking.

It would be neat to be able to buy a non-IR laser that packed a huge punch. > 5 W. Think about the damage (under proper and safe conditions of course) you could do with that!

That would be amazing, But if it were so readily available imagine how many people would blind there self and others.

If that was a 5W laser, they had some serious filtering on the camera.. 5W of 532 shining on a white surface like that would be impossible to be in the room with without eye protection and would definitely overload a cmos or ccd camera. Plus at 5W unless that was a piece of metal, it should be scorching it fairly easily. ... Not to mention it's awfully quiet.. Every high power green i've seen has had loads of active cooling (big loud fans)


Though I think the the OP would be sadly disappointed at what a 5W laser could actually do, which would be not much more than 1W can, only a little faster. Its more of a hazard to living things than anything else and forget about doing much damage to anything very solid.. to cut even thin metal takes 100W+ of a wavelength thats absorbed by the material instead of reflected.. which usually means needing a CO2 laser.

Trimming hedges.. heh. that's funny. That would be about as practical... not to mention unsafe.. as doing it a fully automatic weapon.
