Until just recently I didn't believe in Karma, but recently I did some things that I wish I didn't do and Karma came and bit me hard on the ass. I'm doing all I can to do whats right now and I'm trying to get a second job to do so, hopefully Karma doesn't kill me before then :-/

Anyone else have a story or experience with Karma?

I had lunch with her once. She lives right outside Tempe, AZ. We had been talking in MSN Groups for awhile and I had to go to AZ for some business. I got to meet her and her daughter. She's lovely and funny. If you get the chance, you should have lunch with her as well.

Peace,
dave

Tempe :o I used to live just a few minutes from there. Good ole Gilbert, AZ I will miss it...kinda ;D I don't miss the 133 degree weather, and don't say it's not that bad because it's a dry heat 133 degrees is really freaking hot no matter what. Although Detroit isn't much better at 10 degrees....

I don't believe in karma.

Karma is the belief that when you do something, you get something in return.

I believe in being a good person, I don't need anything in return.

Karma isn't a rule, but it applies. If you're nice to people they will be nice back and you'll be happier and richer. Be an arsehole and your reputation suffers, as does your business. People hold grudges against you, you get threats... it works.

I applaud you for your character.  However, Karma is much more complex than "you get what you deserve".  This view of Karma is easily explained by human nature.  Humans, in general, treat others the way they are treated by them.  It is also explained simply by our mind's desire to rationalize the world.  Post hoc, ergo propter hoc, satisfies the NEED of the human brain to "make sense" of infinite random variation.

However, there is another view that is firmly in the realm of religion/spirituality.  This other view is that Karma is simply a way to learn and grow (usually through multiple lifetimes).  This view says that we are here to learn and mature.  We set up each life to learn valuable lessons.  If we learn the lesson, we get to move on to a new lesson.  If we don't learn the lesson, we will repeatedly set up circumstances in this life, and maybe the next, that will allow us to learn the lesson.  If we still don't learn the lesson, we will set up increasingly severe situations until we do learn.

The majority of people think that Karma is an act vs. reward system (the first view above).  I usually go no farther than that.  Not everyone needs to understand different viewpoints.  You appear to be one who wants to/needs to understand human nature.  If you have not done this, watch "The Matrix" trilogy with philosophy in mind.  The comparison of the beliefs of "The Merovingian" (the guy who owns the nightclub) and "Rama-Kandra" (the Indian "father" Neo meets in the train station) explain these two viewpoints.

The Matrix.

Karma is just a word.
As is love.
Respect
honor.

All just words.

What the word implies to each of us as individuals, can be unique. So the word "karma" can be vague and general, which is why to, "take it with a grain of salt", as they say. :-/

Sure, we could all argue and start religious battles because of our indifferences (not saying that's what we're doing, just that we could), but I believe it's more logical to keep an open mind. "Free your mind". Because what the word "karma" implies to me may differ then all you who are reading these words. But to me, karma is a FACT. It exists 100%. It probably could be mathematically proven, or defiantly presented in terms of values, and how everything naturally balances out... Because there's a force that exists that existed long before us, long before the Earth...And it's not in our control. However, as we are all created "In the image of God" (IMO) that we all have great influence on the "force" around us, or in "our world". But ultimately, it has a very strong current (a trillion million Amps) that has the most influence, and changes "our world" (all existence too) beyond our control. "The world is constantly changing. Those who change with it, survive." So, by moral principal and self-discipline, one can choose to ride on the + (positive) side and thus, "his world" will be saturated in, + energy. And for those who choose the other side, well, their world will be consumed by - (negative) energy...... as the core of "karma" to my beliefs, I add, .... eventually, or sooner.

TBH, I dont believe in Karma.

Sure if you punch someone, theyll probably punch you back.

But, considering all humans are is a bunch of cells or chemical reactions, I dont think its anything more than a nerve in the brain reacting to something

We must be more than just cells and chemical reactions. Cells and chemical reactions alone can't create a thought process as complicated as our own, there must be more to humans than just cells and reactions, something else that makes us who we are.

Nope.... pretty much just cells, reactions, interactions, and a bit of electricity for good measure.

To say that we can't do something that we most definitely are doing doesn't make much sense. Remember, infinite random variation allows for pi.

Well nobody knows for sure if we are just chemicals and reactions and life is just a very complex natural phenomenon or if we have souls (that do or do not weigh 21 grams or whatever), except for religious people who just think they know because they blindly believe in something which may or may not be true, but for sure that can't be the true sense of the word "to know". :P

Interesting that you pose a definition for "to know". In the grand scheme of things who is the correct person or entity to allow such a meaning for "to know"? Take for instance gravity, we "Know" it exists, but we humans in our infinite wisdom and knowledge still do not "know" what it is, or what causes it. How can you determine what is good if there is no benchmark pre-established? What is evil if there is nothing to counter it? They may just be words, but without something, or someone to judge them by, then all that is left is anarchy, which reduces us all to mere chemicals, cells, and reactions, and we can do what is right only by our own definitions. Yet some believe there is more than this. We don't know why, we don't know how, but, we know. The question then becomes, where do you search for that "belief"? Which directs us to what may be the "best answer"? Can we "know" for certain? Some believe we can, some believe we can come close. Others believe we cannot. Does that mean we should stop looking?
