i am proud to announce we will be moving to a dedicated server on June 19. the large amount of donations has helped make this possible and will continue to help


after i get home from work tomorrow i will be doing the DNS changes to point the site to the new hosting. i will be putting this site in maintenance mode at this time...


DNS takes a while to propagate sometimes... if you need to access the new right away it will still be possible by editing yours hosts file



if you want to do this on windows , edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (open hosts with notepad)

disclaimer: i am not responsible for anything that might go wrong by editing the hosts file. this is intended for advanced users.

add this line

save the hosts file, clear browser cache / cookies, and then u should go to the new LPF (not the LPF currently in maintenance mode)

** NOTE **

you don't have to do this change... only do it if you want to access the new LPF right away without waiting for DNS changes to propergate

if u change the hosts file, u should remove the line i mentioned above after a few days... this is only a temporary fix to access site right away

i have done quite a bit of testing and everything should work out with the new server. if there are problems we can always safely and easily go back to the current setup

The DNS server is a server that every Internet company have in which all the websites are stored with their IPS.

This way, when you type Google and press enter, first your browser asks the DNS server what IP does this server have and after this it just goes to the IP the DNS gave.

Long time ago, when there were only a few internet websites, the "hosts" file used to be a copy of the DNS server to avoid the computer having to ask the server every time with the so slow connections of that time.

Nowadays, with the fast connections, this isn't done anymore, and the hosts file has become almost useless.

why does this affect us? We are moving to a new server, this means the IP of www.laserpointerforums.com is going to change and until all the DNS servers update the new IP for this forums if you try to acces by typing the adress you are going to be directed to the old server. And it can take up to a week for your DNS srver to update.

wtf, no lpf for a week??? Nope, here's where the hosts file can help us. If you save an adress with it's ip your browser won't ask the DNS server anymore. So you will go to the new Ip directly. This is what, for example, some antispyware programs like Spybot do when you use the "immunize" function. They add all the webpages that are known to contain malware and it puts a false IP to them, this way if you ever go to them you won't be able to open it.

How to change the hosts archive? COPY AND PASTE THIS WHEREEVER YOU WANT, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS SOON AS YOU NOTICE THE FORUM DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE THIS AFTERNOON, NOT BEFORE.

You will see a file with no extension called "hosts". right click, propietes, and unmark the "only reading", save, and now right click on it again, "open with", and use notepad to open. You will find this:

In case you have used Spybot after this there will be something like:

"# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy

So, just after this list (if you don't got this then ofc after the first part) copy andpaste this:

NOW, VERY IMPORTANT

File->Save as->

hosts (not "hosts.txt", hosts with no extension)
type "all the files" (dunno if this traduction from the spanish windows is correct, anyways there should be sthing like "document text .txt" and "al the files", so, the second option)

now, save it. Go to your browser, delete the cookies and close the browser, open again, and you are ready to go.
