It is necessary to remove the back part of the LD module?

Hello fellow LPF members,

I have this burning question before I could continue my laser assembly:

Why do instructions and tutortials always say to remove the back end of the laser diode Module? Why can't it be attached to give additional heatsinking? I think that it should have enough space as the full LD module shown in the picture is shorter than the heatsink from SL and should not obstruct anything else?

If your build has enough room, there is no need to remove the back part of the module.
Sometimes I'll have to shorten the module a little for a particular build, but I usually still use the remaining portion if I can.

Oh okay, that's agrees with my logic,
Thank you so much, because, you know.., I'm afraid to desolder the laser diode if I made a mistake, risk burning it.
 
If you decide to remove the back part of the module, there is no reason to have to de-solder anything, the back of the module just screws on.

the back part of the module is sliding on the wire that is soldered-joining the laser diode and the driver, so If i want it out, i will have to desolder the wire

DTR's new half-length back half modules allow them to fit more easily into different designs. But what you show in your photo will fit if you use a drilled-through pill.

They also have the full copper backs too idk if that's what you meant Gary. Kind of hard to find sometimes

DTR offers an option of a full or half-length copper back which is handy depending on how much room you have in your build for the stack of components:

I just noticed after I made the order :crackup: I thought the full/half back length option was for the wires' length. :crackup::crackup:
