is this worth it?

That's a nice kit, but you can do this cheaper by harvesting a diode from a DVD burner and using an Aixiz "module" (The tube with the lens in it) plus a few parts from radio shack.

Here is a link to brand new DVD burner drives starting at 20 bucks...

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,CD / DVD Burners & Media,CD / DVD Burners,$10 - $25

The forum has tutorials on how to extract the diode, and there are folks on here selling the modules.

You could have your whole project completed before that kit ever arrived from Korea.

P.S. sometimes you can get DVD burners removed from service at PC repair shops for free, never hurts to ask.

LOC or LCC diode=$10
LM317 Driver parts=$6
Aixis module=$5
Total cost =$26.00
Even cheaper if you can find a old DVD burner in the trash. Most computers less then 5-7 years old have them.
If you see a old computer in the trash, stop and look to see if it has a burner, if so, grab that sucker and take it home.
Total cost then=$16

Long Closed Can diode = $10
Rkcstr driver = $15
aiXiz module W/ stock lens = $5

Total $30 with the driver already assembled

Send me a PM

Peace,
dave
