I thought it was that you can't accelerate to the speed of light. Is that right?

This already exists, they are called Fresenl Lens and they are extremely scary (especially the big ones) It is not a laser for many reasons, but one is because it focuses light down to a point.. it doesnt maintain a "Beam"

Either way look in to fresnel lenses they can be a lot of fun, fairly cheap too. Just be careful they can literally destroy concrete, let alone set your house/lawn on fire.

Edit: why use a spotlight, the sun is easier and stronger. heres a video of one in action from a quick google. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcL7s9aX494 puts our lasers to shame =p

I haven't received it yet, but will get it tested. they can be pushed to 1,100 mw and still last a few months, its from a forum member. but lets not derail thread too much =p
