Is this IR laser a good deal or not

it would probably be fun for burning stuff, but from what i've read fiber coupled lasers are hard to collimate into a beam

They've gone for a lot less that $60
And you are correct in that a pointer type beam is out. :'(

20 dollors to ship one little diode that weighs as much as 4 paperclips.....

Only thing bad it would be multi mode so you woudlnt get a get beam out of it, it can be focused to a small spot tho like a foot away, then it would burn really good.

....lazer... ;D ;D ;D

I dont get what Direct Pump Solid State is

Is it just a fancy name for a diode?? Im so confused

no it is not just a diode, it is an ir multimode diode going thru crystals that convert the nm to green or red whatever crystals used changes what color comes out at the end, they arent perfect tho. Not all of it is changed for insance 5mw greens normaly have a 150mw ir diode because the crystals dont change it all to the other color and some of the ir makes it thru that is why you need an ir filter

[tt]...lazer... ;D ;D ;D[/tt]

Diode Pumped Solid State, or DPSS for short, is the process with the crystals, i dunno what that one is, unless someone just got it mixed up.

DPSS is added to EVERYTHING laser on ebay. They have no idea what it means, it just gets hit more often when people search for lasers.

true that. And NO, a TO-5 DOES NOT fit in the GB housing, unless I'm mixed up. The housing takes 5.6mm diodes. Though I doubt my driver could handle the current needed to produce 1W of IR. (1800mA ish)

Yea, DPSS is often just added for a search term. I've seen DPSS used for gas lasers before. DPSS is, as said above, short for diode pumped solid state. Basically, its a solid state laser (IE, the laser medium is a solid such as a crystal, instead of gas or dye) in which a diode pumps the medium with power. This is like in a 532nm greenie where an 808nm pumps Nd:YAG or Nd:YVO4 with power, and that crystal then lases at 1064nm.

Anyway though, that diode in the auction is a 9mm can, the Aixiz take 5.6mm cans so that won't fit. Also keep in mind that a 1W 808nm is most definitely a multi-mode so you can expect beam specs a good 10-20x worse than the lasers you're probably used to.

just use the end of the fiber to burn things :) at point blank you could burn through a car tire with that thing

fiber coupled is only good at point blank. they are also fragile as hell you nudge the fiber loose from the connector and you might never get it lined up again.
