Does anyone have or know a cheap source of IR lasers.
Also can one be made form a green laser?

I want to build one for long range night vision viewing.

What's this got to do with 'Science of lasers' lol

How much power do you need? drlava had a nice model for sale at 1 Watt for a few hundred, that's really powerful.
 
I know this thread is older, but you can get 100mW 780nm modules from Aixiz for $20.
 
You could also get dvd burners at eBay and get an even stronger ir + 16x red 8-)
 
Just do what I did: Drill a hole in your 5mW green laser where the pot is, and accidentaly miss and go in too far. If you hit the right spot, your laser will no longer put out green. Instead, it will put out more IR than there was green! It will be very divergent, though. About the size of my fist ~10' away. (If you're wondering how this happened, my laser was breaking and it was getting really weak, so I thought I'd pot mod it to get it up to it's origanal power for a while. Well, the top wouldn't come off, so I drilled a hole over the pot only to miss, and I now have an IR laser. :-/) I'm still trying to find a lens to focus the IR...
 
Problem with that, is you have killed the IR diode itself, so chances are it wont burn anyway :-/
