Interested in 2.4W o-like 808nm laser, what else would i need to run it?

I've seen a lot of good things about o-like, and being a amateur laser enthusiast, I was interested in investing in a more powerful laser. I've contacted o-like through ebay with no response and was wondering if anybody could give me some quick followup.

My question: if I purchased the 2.4Watt 808nm laser diode module from o-like's website, what else will I need to effectively use this laser (aside from some quality protective goggles)? Please don't assume that I may already have some sort of fundamental equipment; as I've already mentioned I am an amateur and am interested in getting into this hobby. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely a driver, heat sink, host, and batteries.

There are some instructions for your reference when you use it


1. Pls use 5VDC power supply to power it ,
2. Red wire stands “+” power , Black wire stands”-“ power .
White wire stands “+” of TTL Blue wire stands “-“ of TTL
TTL 3-5V on ,0V off .
If you don’t use TTL function ,just don’t care blue and white wires .left it what it is .
3. If you want laser works more better, put it on metal block and use fans to cool it .
4.Pls don't use it continuously , better not more than 1 minute to use one time . or bad cooling will burn the diode to dead .

Highly remmend to work it with goggles to protect your eyes

You might want to start with something less powerful and more visible (less dangerous) to learn about lasers.

Daguin: Thanks, I know how dangerous infrared lasers can be (lasers in general). I used to have a 250mw red laser but I sold it because of money issues. I own two video cameras with infrared filters for night vision (one quality and one not) and was planning on using these in combination with a pair of protective goggles for added safety.

VillaLaser: That is exactly the laser i was interested in.

My only question is how I would power something like this. Is it as simple as connecting a 5.0v dc power supply to red and black and maybe adding a switch in between? What confused me is the wires for TTL function (the blue and white ones from description). What exactly would I connect to those? Would the laser operate properly if I disregard them?
 
We have one of these in the Shop...
You will need a Good Clean Filtered 5 Volt at least 5 Amp
Power supply to power the included Driver...
If you use a cheap Switching Power Supply... all the ripple
will go through the Driver and possibly blow your LD..
I would suggest installing a RED/IR LASORB across the LD as
well.. You will also need a good Cooling Fan.. The Diver WILL
get Hot...

And of course good 808nm Laser Goggles...

BTW... if you are not using the TTL circuit then just insulate
those wires and not use/connect them...:cool:

+3-5v on the TTL line will turn it on, +0v on the TTL will turn it off.
Just add 3-5volts to the TTL. :D

I greatly appreciate all of the feedback, you've cleared up any questions concerning TTL that I had. Concerning the power supply though, I've found numerous power supplies that offer 5VDC with a minimum of 5A, but they all appear to be switching or linear. How would I be able to identify one that provides the right voltage and amperage but is also considered a "Good Clean Filtered" power supply?
 
You would need a full wave PS that uses a large transformer and has
good capacitor and choke filtering...

You may be able to use a good quality Computer Power supply that
can supply 5Amps at 5Volts...
I have not yet used a Computer PS myself...

yea pretty much i think you'll be happier with that laser anyway nothing better than the beam of a 200 green... well maybe a 300 green but still :D
 
Yeah...better choice...IMO
That one you can easily see the beam....
You will absolutely need 532nm Laser Safety Goggles for that one...
And it comes with a driver that plugs into the standard
120VAC house current..
