I'm looking for another custom build....

After having Dr. Lava build me a custom Leadlight Bluray (review coming soon!) I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship of this custom laser. So, I am now hot in the pants to get another pair of laser pointers that I've always wanted made... brighter than normal red pointers. My goal is to have some reds that are comparable to eye safe greens, more for my own satisfaction than anything else

I would want a 635 driven to 15ish mw and a deep red, ie 660-670 driven to appx 40mw, enough to make it roughly equal to the 635 in brightness. I figure a slightly overdriven Axiz 635 and a significantly underdriven dvd burner would accomplish these goals...?

I would want the diodes mounted OEM style in pointer cases, such as this from DX. I like the Leadlight look and I know they work, but they're damn expensive hosts and I really don't want to pay for two more $70 hosts lol. The good Doctor succeeded in utilizing the factory button setup in my bluray, and that is another condition I would want.

I know I'm being picky, but I don't have any pretentions that this will be cheap, either. I figure these lasers will probably cost me about $75 each plus the cost of the hosts.

I'm really trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with this here, hell, I may even try to do it myself.

Any advice or input would be GREATLY appreciated.

ps- I'm lookin' at you, Doc. ;)

Well,,, I do think 15-20mW of 635nm red makes a dandy pointer. About 20mW @ 635 is a good match, brightness wise, when compared to 5mW @ 532nm.

What I like is ~20mW of 635nm appears very bright (my 125mW DVD burner does not appear more than 2x as bright), while at the same time giving excellent battery life and duty cycle. My latest 635nm (http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1213420629) pointer has no duty cycle, and lasts for > 10 hours using 2AA alkaline.

It's the pointer I reach for most of the time - relatively eye safe, still plenty bright, and I can leave it on and not worry about the diode cooking itself (lol). Most of the 15mW diodes I've got need between 60-80mA to reach spec.. a bit more reasonable than the 250-400mA for a burner diode 8-)

No, I'm not offering to build you one. However I think you'll be happy with such a pointer. If you're willing to wait I'm planning on building a few of these pointers for sale - I've got a small stock of 15mW 635nm diodes. I don't think such a pointer could command much more than $50-75. It's hard to compete with DX. So I'm still trying to sort what sort of power supply/housing/optics I want to use.

I'm also planning on moding a few more keychain pointers to 15mW @ 635nm. However these would be minimal, only using a drop out resistor for a power supply, so I can offer them for around $20.00.

The DX laser I linked to was only given as a reference to the type of case I would like to use. If you're not willing to build one for me, would you be willing to part with one of the diodes? When are you planning to make your pointers, and what host are you planning to use?

Where the heck did you get 15mw 635s? lol... The best I've been able to turn up that don't cost a fortune is 10mw.

Thanks for the help :)

Wouldn't this be more appropriate in the Buy, Sell, Trade forum?

I'm more looking for input here, I have a separate thread in BST.
