Im new to this whole DIY laser thing..
im trying to build a really high powered cutting laser...
what color laser should I use?
and where can I get schematics for a circuit?
what about cooling the laser for extended use?
Thanks!

Every piece of information you want is on the forum. The forum search is useful ;) ;)

However, do you specifically want a colour? You can get infrared lasers, which give you most power for money, although you cant see the actual laser. For a viewable laser, red produces the most mW per $, which are quite efficient for a diy and quite easy to build.

Get the DX200 red laser. It's a super burner and the best you will get for your money. Nice and cheap and a great laser from DX.

ok here is the basic formula for a super burner.

1x DrLava FlexMod pre-assembled and set to 380-400mA (with a 15mW bias)
- you will learn what the means as you research
1x 22X DVD burner
- There is a list of the ones to buy in the red laser forums
1x 5 to 9 vold power supply
- i use a old cell phone charger
1x AiXiz module
- again you will figure out what this is as you read

put it all together and you have a 300mW red burning laser that can later be used in a bad ass red laser scanner.

basics like wire, a soldering gun, old heat sink, junk like that.

No one asked this yet ...

What is it exactly that you want to cut ?

I don´t think that he wants to build something like a cnc cutting machine, more a red burner ;D
So search around on the forums, and use the information that is already posted in this thead.

If you are going to build a laser cutter, the most suitable wavelength depends on the absorbance(?) of the material.

i doubt an aixiz module set at 400ma will get you 300mw of power...

more like 200mw

but you can bump up the current if you have the proper heat sinking and get a meredith or a glass aixiz lenses and get closer to the 300mw mark.

Welcome to LPF,

Yeah,^^^^to get upwards of 300mW output power from the diode(22x L die open can) , you would
need to use the premium module (meredith/glass) & run it at 420-430mA or crank up the driver current to 480mA for use with the Aixis module. You will also need a good heat sink (jayrob)to protect the diode.

I actually dont care if it looks like a ghost busters pack.. as long as I can cut/melt alot of stuff with it...

im looking to atleast light cigarrettes instantly from across a room.

or atleast have something where I can draw on wood...
im an artist, and id really like to have the ability to burn paints, wood, or anything else I might want too.
Also... I cut alot of stencils from Acetate, or Duralar. Id like to have a laser to cut those really quickly

ive got a diode out of a 22x dvdrw from hp

thanks

im looking to atleast light cigarrettes instantly from across a room. - not gonna happen with a red open can

atleast have something where I can draw on wood... - gonna be slowww. I would use an ir for that.

Also... I cut alot of stencils from Acetate, or Duralar. Id like to have a laser to cut those really quickly - DEFINITELY not gonna happen with a red open can

Please to be referring to the DrLava long open can roundup

its closer to like 255 (i was wrong with the 300)

ive got a couple spare dvd roms laying around...
ive got an 8x dvd a 16 x dvd and a 22 x dvd...
all broken... :P

so what can I make with these bad boys...

ps

ive also got a star wars blaster rifle lying around...
id like to eventually make it into a super burner too... :P
I saw one on youtube of a 1200mw green laser lighting matches at 300ft.
are green lasers more powerful for burning than red ones?

Green isn't necessarily all that much better for burning, but 1200mW is 4 times as powerful as the 300mW or so that you'll expect from the best red diode you can get.

DVD-ROM drives will make weak, red pointers like what you buy at the gas station. DVD burner drives make strong lasers, up to around 300mW.

If you just want to say "KEWL!!!!!" and burn stuff like the things you mentioned, well, be prepared to drop some serious cash if you want a visible laser. With infrared you can start burning stuff, and you can get really high power pretty cheap, but it's basically invisible and VERY dangerous at these powers.

The best you can hope for from a DVD burner is to pop balloons, strike matches, and take FOREVER to burn some little marks into wood.

Also, you need eye protection. Badly. You also really need to do a lot more reading about what lasers are and are not capable of. They can and will blind you. They won't cut your arm off. They will strike matches. They won't cut wood in half (at least not without getting huge, table-top lasers like a CO[sub]2[/sub]). Really, do some more reading and learning. The last thing we want is for you to go off half-cocked and break your laser diode, or infinitely worse, blind yourself or someone else.

Not going to happen with a 22X Burner, you would need a few watts for what you want to do. You would probably be best with a C-Mount 2-3W 808nm IR diode, though collimating the beam might be a bit harder with a C-Mount.
