I have got a FREE 12kv 30 ma neon sign transformer.
What type of wire would i want to use with it.

What do you want to power with this transformer? Hmm, I think that everyone who owns a NST is supposed to build a Jaccob's ladder :]

ok thanks i want to make a tesla coil but first i will make a jacobs ladder

Well, if you want to make a tesla coil you can use every wire, because you're not supposed to touch it or be close to it when it's operating. Just make sure that the wires carrying hv are in safe distance from everything else.

right now i just want to try it to make sure it works. How do i ground the nst

You usually don't solder to a case, you should use screw it on or use a nut and bolt to attach it.

Yes, use a nut and bolt and a star washer for your ground, it's not something you wanna skimp on.

Tesla coils are quite fidgity, so if you can't figuure out how to ground a NST, I suggest you do some reading before you attempt one, they can be 1100% lethal if you arent careful.

Also, what type of NST is it? Is it super heavy and large, or light and made of plastic?

Pics would help.

BTW, Even tho your NST is grounded, DO NOT touch the case, or go close to it while it's running. 12kV can jump a fair distance.

BTW, I recommend using some super insulated silicone wire for the HV, but even thought it's super insulated, always use some kind of chicken stick when "playing" with it (DRY wood, or PVC)

High Voltage

Jamilm9 have you thought about looking on the tesla coil forum for any answers related to high voltage or maby tesla coils.

Best Regards Pyro...

It a large one, i also have a light tiny 3 kv one. I'm using a piece of abs pipe as my chicken stick.
