Hi guys,

I wanted to share something with you. I went to Cancun in holidays and did some clubbing there. I was surprised that laser pointers, especially green ones were used in clubs by waiters or clubbers. Not just pointing the ceiling but anybody who dance, sometimes in the face. The pointers used seem to be cheap ebay overspecs ones. With a power range of 5 to around 50-100mw. Everybody acts recklessly with those, I saw some people shining purposely the eyes of another person at a distance like 1m just to anger the person...

I saw no one complaining of that on internet which means that no one got his eyes damaged by a laser or at least did not notice it which considering the power of the lasers is really surprising.

I post three images from a video that I took in one of the clubs. As you see I got almost hit twice by a laser of at least 50mw...

Even though most of the people using laser swipe them fast at a distance the danger is still existent... Are 30-50mw laser so safe?

I would not want to be in a dark room with flashing lights and 3 or 4 idiots with overspec IR leaking greenies running amuck. That would lead to me telling them they need to blah, blah, blah laserpointerforums blah, blah, blah

At this point just today some of the post in regards to laser saftey I fear the dopes are winning.

Mike if you or your friend go back to one of these clubs bring the appropriate goggles and a nice sized mirror.

Ahaha, I thought about the mirror. It seems to be a common practice to use laser pointers in the clubs there. There are like 10 people using lasers in the clubs including waiters.

I usually put my sunglasses when they were shining lasers in front of me just in case. I don't know if helps really but I think as the light transmittance is around 10% so it can probably buy you some time to blink and anyway your pupils are fully dilated in either case. Any advices? I was not hit in the whole week so I am happy.

Or better yet reflective sunglasses, might let them taste their own medicine.

Those crazy Mexico clubs.

Ya need an iron gut, to stomach the cheap alcohol. A wallet on a chain, to keep form having it stolen. And now laser safety goggles!
Your life expectancy goes down by two years just walking into one of these places. Lol

Ahaha :) in fact in Cancun the hotel zone and club zone is really safe, there is like only one main street and you cross one police car every 30 seconds at night when walking and there are only tourists.

It's even more surprising that trips organizers such as Student City recommends to bringing a laser pointers... no but seriously.

"Laser pointer – clearly a must-have for the clubs and night scene and I missed the memo beforehand. I’ve never tried it around here but I’m pretty sure laser pointers are not allowed in the bars and clubs in Boston, but they are apparently encouraged on Spring Break. Do yourself a favor and purchase one."

Neutral toned sunglasses won't help at all. Whatever limited transmisivity they have is compensated for by your pupil widening. Amber/brown sunglasses might help just a smidge since they start blocking out the green-middle through the blue-violet end of the vis spectrum.

Mirroring will help since there's actual reflectivity there, but you're only really safe with actual laser goggles that have a decent OD for 532nm green.

Actually I think they might help a little. Since the environment is already dark your pupil will not widen more with or without sunglasses. Take a green laser and make it pass through sunglasses, I tried with my 50mw and it looks like if the power was greatly reduced. If you take cat. 3 sunglasses that have a light transmittance of about 15% it is more or less valid for each color, including 532nm which reduces a 50mw to 7.5mw without speaking of pupil widening. If someone has a meter and could do the test it would be interesting?

I totally agree that you don't protect yourself with sunglasses in a normal experiment since laser protection google cut almost completely that frequency (OD3 = 0.1% of the initial power).

I'd be tempted to "return the favor" with a 300+ mW beam, but that would make me no better than them.

hmm........i "fell asleep" (sure, that's what we'll call it) on the beach right outside of Fat Tuesdays bar in Cancun and woke up with a cop's hand in my pocket, pulling my cash out.

i looked at him, his partner looked at me, he took the cash and walked away.

short version: having the cops around does not = safe in mexico

Kmrod: my brother in law was traveling through Mexico to his home town, and decided to camp the night by the roadside.
He woke up to find that someone had jimmied the door on his car and stole his boom box, a hand gun and some other stuff.
He went to the nearest police station to file a report, and apon entering, he noticed his radio playing on the counter!

He just turned around and left. Lol

You were probably more than a little drunk... and yes cops are quite corrupt, especially in locations where the relative rich people vacationing, mix with the very poor locals.

If you pushed the issue, they would have said you had no money, and they wanted to check for ID since you were passed out.

Edit: That is if anyone actually bothered to care about it.
