im working on a robot project for a friend.he wants me to install the laser behind a hole in the robots face.the robots head moves and it makes sound using a remote control.its 8ft tall. my question is he wants to use this at his backyard parties. how can i use this laser and keep it safe from any bouncing beams of if it shoots into a neighbors yard? can i use a filter or flasher so it turns on and off every second? i dont want anyone looking direct into the beam and thought of diffusing it somehow so its safe.any ideas would be great.thank you.

Tell your friend it's a bad idea or buy a laser that is <5mW. Of course then that won't be very impressive. Oh and most lasers labeled as <5mW are often much more powerful. It's just a bad idea unless you can be sure no one gets hit in the face with the laser.

Your best bet would be mounting one of these on the robot. These are designed to diffuse the light and make it safer.

It would help if you had a party on a foggy night, or if you acquired a fog machine. While 532nm is almost on the peak on human vision(during daytime), this drops to around ~507nm during nighttime, which dosen't make too much of a difference for 532nm as it's pretty much in the middle.

5mW would appear semi-bright in the dark but having a fog machine or anything similar would help enhance the beam(if you are interested in that). :yh:

Need more info before I can say your friend's project is dangerous and unnecessary. Is this a light show? Is this something he wants to pop balloons and show off? If it can pop balloons, then it's not something you want in a room full of people who can sue you.

Stick a plasma ball on top of it's head and put the laser away.
