Sorry I missed this, Gabe.
IIRC the aperture cap is screwed onto the module
BEFORE the module is pressed into the housing. In order to remove the aperture cap safely, you would have to use a thin stiff tool to press the module out the front far enough to be above the housing to unscrew the aperture cap. You cannot simply push on the back of the driver. The tool must be thin enough to fit into the small spaces around the driver so it can push against the back of the brass of the module itself. After you clean the lens you would have to screw the aperture cap back on and then press the module back into place.
Although I do not recommend cleaning a lens by "rubbing" something on it, if the lens is dirty enough, it may be the only way. Find something that is stiff enough to hold against some pressure, soft enough not to scratch the lens, and thin enough to fit into the aperture. Then use it to clean the lens as Jim has suggested.
There is one other possibility, but it can lead to
damaging the laser. It most definitely WILL change the look of the laser despite the outcome. Many of the WL aperture caps are very thin metal at the aperture opening and thicker around the edge. One can
SOMETIMES break the center of the aperture cap out by placing a small screwdriver or punch into the aperture and "levering" it up. If successful, you will open the aperture enough to be able to get to the lens more easily. This is VERY DANGEROUS. Sometimes the metal is too thick. Sometimes you hit the lens with the tool. This should only be done if absolutely noting else has worked and the lens is so bad that you are willing to ruin your laser.
I do NOT recommend that action, but only you can decide if the laser is bad enough to warrant such drastic action.
