Ehm ..... trying to explain in few words how a laser diode work, and all the related theory involved, is "a little bit" complicated ..... (using an euphrmism ;))

I don't know about laser diodes, but for normal white and blue high-flux LEDs, the substrate of choice is synthetic sapphire.. Perhaps its similar for LDs?
 
I think it is generally the same material as the active region but a different type. GaAs reds and GaN blues, maybe substrate is AlGaAs and InGaN

Maybe we can get PBD to upload the contents of his brain into this thread :p
