How does this diode work?

I friend of mine asked what the lasing medium was for my new o-like
Cute High power 250mW red laser torch/focusable [OL-CRL-250] - $54.99 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce
I was wondering, how do these diodes work? I know the basic concept of the electrons, the energy on both sides of the channel bouncing the light back and forth until it comes out the end. But whats in the middle? is there a crystal involved?

Ehm ..... trying to explain in few words how a laser diode work, and all the related theory involved, is "a little bit" complicated ..... (using an euphrmism )

I don't know about laser diodes, but for normal white and blue high-flux LEDs, the substrate of choice is synthetic sapphire.. Perhaps its similar for LDs?

I think it is generally the same material as the active region but a different type. GaAs reds and GaN blues, maybe substrate is AlGaAs and InGaN
