How does the current flow?

I'm building my own host at the moment, but was wondering if the host acts as a conductor for the current flow, or is there a different way to get the battery's negative connected to the driver?

Usually, the host acts as a conductor for the current flow - positive or negative, side, depending on what your set-up is like.

it wont hurt the diode, or any other part in any way?

You shouldn't hook your diode directly to the case unless your very sure of what you're doing. Usually the driver has two separate +&- terminals. One for the case input and the other set for the diode output.

Usually the driver isolates the diode from the current and voltage in the actual case.

So the diode is isolated from the host? K thnx. Now I know everything I need to know.
